OIA HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Win earns Kalani a home game
Kalani's win yesterday at Kahala Field in its regular-season finale put the Falcons in position to play another home game next week.
Junior left-hander Shamus Kumashiro earned a complete-game victory as Kalani secured the fourth seed in the Oahu Interscholastic Association's East Division with a 5-1 win over Castle, earning the Falcons a spot as a home team for the first round of the league playoffs.

The 12-team OIA tournament begins May 2 at the home fields of the higher seeded teams.
Kumashiro waited until the final game of the regular season to notch his first win of the year. He surrendered a run in the top of the first inning, then shut down the Knights the rest of the way, limiting Castle to six singles.
"He's had some hard luck all year," Kalani coach Shannon Hirai said. "We haven't played defense behind him and he pitched pretty well. This is hopefully a boost for his confidence."
Kalani (7-3) capitalized on three Castle errors in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead and put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Falcons scored all of their runs with two outs.
Kumashiro struck out four and got some help from his defense. Falcons right-fielder Ridge Carpenter saved a run in the first with a diving catch of a line drive to the gap. Third-baseman Darren Takemoto speared a shot down the line in the sixth to help protect a one-run cushion.
"It was a whole team effort," Kuamshiro said. "I just let them hit and all my fielders did it for me. We executed the plays we had to."
Castle (6-4) took the lead in the first when Dallas Olsen's grounder snuck past Takemoto and into left, allowing shortstop Kyle Kanaeholo to score from second.
Right-hander Barron Meyer nearly matched Kumashiro, but a rough third inning in the field for the Knights led to two unearned runs.
The Knights looked like they might keep the shutout intact when Kanaeholo threw out Kenn Kamoto, who was trying to score from first on Joshua Markwith's double to left field.
But a throwing error on Jordan Sumida's grounder allowed Markwith to score and a dropped fly ball brought in Sumida with the go-ahead run.
"Coming off a tender arm earlier in the season, (Meyer) pitched a terrific game. But hard luck," Castle coach Joe Tom said. "That one inning we made four uncharacteristic errors."
Kalani padded its lead in the sixth on Chris Pieper's pinch-hit single up the middle, followed by Neal Wakazuru's double to center.
The teams began the day tied in the OIA East standings and the loss dropped Castle to fifth place, which means a drive over the H-3 for the first round of the playoffs.
"By far we wanted to do that (host a playoff game)," Tom said, "but it just didn't happen, so we have to move on."
