Raiders blast past Maryknoll
There is a surplus of energy to burn, to infinity and beyond, at least for the Iolani Raiders.
Using their 12-player roster to the fullest, the top-ranked Raiders swarmed all over Maryknoll en route to a 62-30 win last night at Damien Memorial High School gym.
Iolani, led by Jamie Smith's 11 points and 10 rebounds, dominated the glass. The Raiders outrebounded the much smaller Spartans 32-15. Soana Fifita had nine rebounds for Maryknoll, which was coming off an upset over Kamehameha.
"We had a good effort," coach Bobby Samson said. "We didn't shoot like we did against Kamehameha, but you gotta credit Iolani. We tried to do more backdoor cuts, but their defensive pressure was good."
Iolani improved to 6-1 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (18-1 overall). Maryknoll slipped to 2-6 in league play.
There was no element of surprise for Maryknoll. Iolani was well aware of sharpshooters Nicole Fu and Kimberly Henderson. Fu, who had scored 44 and 29 points in recent games, was limited to just 12 points. Henderson, a sophomore who drained four big 3-pointers in the win over Kamehameha, finished with just one point.
Iolani's matchup zone gave neither gunner room to breathe. Fu worked as hard as possible to get open looks, but finished just 3-for-17 from the field. Her fatigue showed at the foul line, as well, where she was only 5-for-10.
"They were everywhere. I'd drive and someone else was waiting for me," she said of Iolani's 2-3 matchup. The Raiders put pressure on the ball at midcourt, using the weak-side guard as safety net in a setup that looked more like a 1-1-3.
But it was more than defense that propelled Iolani. The Raiders moved the ball with purpose and precision, and their frontcourt shot extremely well.
Smith, Alana Wall, Keilyn Fujioka and Megan Burton combined for 38 points on 17-for-26 shooting (65 percent). Fujioka scored 10 points, while Wall had 10 points off the bench. Burton hustled for seven points and nine rebounds, also as a reserve.
Alana Matayoshi tallied 10 points and gave the Raiders a spark on both ends of the floor.
"We played with intensity. We kept an eye on Nicole, and coach said not to reach so much this time," Matayoshi said, referring to a 53-31 Iolani win on April 8. "Last time, they got most of their points off free throws."
This time, Maryknoll still attempted 25 free throws and made 15, but managed to shoot only 18 percent (7-for-38) against Iolani's merciless zone and man defenses.
"Our defense was good. We gotta try to carry it over to the next game," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "We can still get better, but we're on the right path now."
Maryknoll stayed close for a while, but Matayoshi scored on a pair of fast-break layups to spark a 13-2 run to close the opening quarter. By the time the senior swingman hustled for a follow shot midway through the second quarter, the Raiders led 23-4 and weren't threatened the rest of the way.
Iolani, which normally rotates its starters and reserves throughout the game, did the same last night. The Raiders host Sacred Hearts on Friday.
