UH golfers in sixth place at WAC tournament
The University of Hawaii golf team is tied for sixth after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference championship tournament yesterday at Morgan Hill, Calif.
Xyra Suyetsugu led the Rainbow Wahine by shooting a 4-over 76 yesterday. She is tied for eighth individually, four strokes behind leader Carmina Calle of San Jose State, who shot an even-par 72.
Hawaii (26-over 314) is 17 strokes behind tournament leader San Jose State (9-over 297).
Huang places third in 3-meter at U.S. Open
University of Hawaii diver QiongJie Huang placed third in the 3-meter springboard on Sunday at the U.S. Open Championship at the Indiana University natatorium. Huang was leading after the semifinals and finished with 288.45 points.
Shimomura, Riley honored by Menlo College
Kari Shimomura has been named the Menlo College Female Athlete of the Year. The senior from McKinley performed at three different positions for the Oaks volleyball team that won it second consecutive California Pacific Conference title.
Shimomura led the Oaks in assists (5.48 per game), was second in digs (3.42 per game) and was third in kills and aces. She was selected to the All-Cal Pac team for the fourth consecutive season, the first time an Oaks volleyball player has achieved that distinction.
Shannon Riley (Maryknoll '02), the only four-year captain on the women's basketball team, received the Don W. Baer Award for showcasing the greatest attributes of all-around leadership.
During her senior season, Riley was named to the All-Cal Pac team and helped lead the Oaks to the NAIA Division II national tournament for the second time in school history.
