Roosevelt rebounds to beat Kalaheo
The Roosevelt Rough Riders fulfilled their coach's lone wish last night.
The visiting Rough Riders won the battle on the boards, and coach Bobby Keanini saw his team clinch first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East with a 59-45 win over Kalaheo.
Tati Beasley led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds for Roosevelt. Iwalani Rodrigues scored nine of her 13 points in the final quarter and hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds. Center Shannon Miyashiro also tallied 13 points.
Roosevelt outrebounded Kalaheo 33-25 to avenge a five-point loss to the Lady Mustangs on March 28.
"This time, we came with intensity," Beasley said. "We're hungry. Bob said, 'There's no strategy. Just rebound the ball.'"
Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado credited Roosevelt for the turnaround.
"They dominated the paint. I thought we needed to be at least even in the post," he said.
Fifth-ranked Roosevelt improved to 10-1 in league play. The Rough Riders, 18-5 overall, still have one regular-season game remaining against McKinley.
Kalaheo dropped to 7-3 in East play (11-7 overall), but are a win away from sealing second place. The top two teams in the East will secure first-round byes in the playoffs.
That scenario has an odd, but not uncommon, twist. One of the OIA's preseason favorites, Kahuku, is in line to play in the same bracket with Roosevelt if the standings remain the same when the playoffs arrive.
Roosevelt, however, played with a singular purpose in one of the state's toughest gyms for any visitor. A combination of man-to-man and zone defenses made the home team work hard.
Shanadee Canon led Kalaheo with 18 points and 10 rebounds despite after-effects of a flu. The normally accurate free-throw shooter made just seven of her 13 attempts. No other Lady Mustang scored in double figures, including sharpshooter Kendra Fischer, who finished with four points.
Though Roosevelt led for all but the first 5 minutes of play, the battle was tight for three quarters. Canon sank a pair of foul shots to bring Kalaheo within 34-33 with 1:28 left in the third quarter.
Rodrigues hit a baseline jumper and a 3-pointer to spark a 16-8 fourth-quarter run by Roosevelt. Tiana Sugui's 3-pointer gave the Rough Riders some breathing room, and Miyashiro hustled for a follow shot to give the Rough Riders a 52-41 lead with 2:19 remaining.
"We kind of hesitated to shoot for a while," Keanini said. "They understand we gotta get touches to Tati and Shannon, but we gotta hit outside to loosen up the defense."
