Wily leads Kahuku on road
Maybe it's not the comforts of home that matter after all.
Kahuku, which barely escaped with a home win over Farrington three weeks ago, dominated the Lady Governors in a 62-45 win last night at McKinley Student Council Gym. Artevia Wily led the way with 26 points, a season high.
The seventh-ranked Lady Raiders improved to 6-4 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East play (13-7 overall). The strong effort was enough to make coach Val Anae smile.
"We just shot better tonight," she said, alluding to a 52-50 win over Farrington on March 28. "And our JV got beat (last night), so that got our team pumped up."
Farrington fell to 3-7 (11-10 overall) as the battle for a playoff spot got a bit tighter.
"Their mental approach wasn't there. You could see it on defense. We just weren't active," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "They can play with Kahuku. It's a matter of executing."
Wily agreed.
"I think mentally they weren't ready," she said of the opening quarter. "When we scored, they were getting down."
Last night, the Lady Govs could not get untracked until the second quarter. Kahuku sprinted to a 15-1 lead thanks to nine quick points by Camilla Ah-Hoy.
The senior guard, still recovering from an offseason shoulder injury, finished with 15 points. Her tenacious man-to-man defense helped spark Kahuku's defense from start to finish.
Wily shot 8-for-21 from the field, but continuously crashed the offensive glass and drew fouls. She made nine of her 12 free-throw attempts and finished with 12 rebounds.
"They're starting to believe in the system more, blocking out, being more aggressive," said Anae, a two-time All-American at BYU.
"We've been practicing a lot on controlling the boards," Wily added. "I think we did that well."
Wily's only 3-pointer of the game gave Kahuku its biggest lead, 30-7, with 3:37 remaining in the second quarter.
Farrington managed to chip away and pulled within 34-21 on Kapio Alatasi's baseline drive before halftime.
C'ani Kealoha's bank shot brought the Lady Govs within 41-31 with 4:21 left in the third quarter. However, Farrington drew no closer.
The Lady Govs shot 30 percent from the field (15-for-50), including 4-for-17 accuracy from the 3-point arc. Kahuku also shot 30 percent from the field (21-for-70), but made 16 of its 22 tries from the foul line.
Alatasi paced Farrington with 12 points. Kealoha added 11.
"We can't dwell on this," Tumaneng cautioned. "We have to get ready for Kalaheo. The playoffs are where we want to be, but we've gotta be consistent."
