Amorozo storms Castle with 2-hitter
By Kyle Galdeira
Special to the Star-Bulletin
Solid pitching and clutch hitting proved to be the keys as No. 5 Moanalua claimed a 3-0 victory over Castle in an Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball game yesterday afternoon at Castle High School.
Menehune starting pitcher Michael Amorozo overcame a cold to earn the win with his best outing of the season. The senior southpaw threw all seven innings, scattering two hits and striking out seven. At one point, Amorozo retired 14 Knights in a row.
"He's been doing this all year," Moanalua coach Scott Yamada said. "Nothing overpowering, but just getting the job done."
The Menehunes (8-1 OIA East) got out to a quick lead in the top of the first inning after Peter Arakawa singled to start the game and scored on a Markus Miyashiro sacrifice fly to left. Castle (5-2) threatened in the bottom of the first with runners on second and third base and just one out. But Amorozo struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam.
"I just tried to keep them off-balance by throwing curveballs and change-ups, and then hit 'em inside with fastballs," Amorozo said. "The defense worked hard to help me get outs and keep us in the game."
Moanalua added another run in the third inning when Jay Yoshizawa tripled to bring home Arakawa, who had reached on a single.
The Knights tried to rally in the sixth inning when Codey Cabael led off with a walk, and starting pitcher Kyle Kanaeholo followed with a single. The runners moved over to second and third on a Brandon Kon sacrifice bunt, but Amorozo got the next two batters to fly out.
"Moanalua was tough," Castle coach Joe Tom said. "Amorozo pitched a smart game and kept us off balance. We couldn't hit as well as we normally have, and we've faced some good pitchers."
The Menehunes added an insurance run to increase the lead to 3-0 in the seventh inning. Senior Trevor Bell smacked a double to deep left field off Cabael, which allowed Joshua Horikawa to score easily from second base.
Kanaeholo was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits through four innings for Castle. Cabael entered in the fifth inning and allowed one run on two hits, and walked a batter in three innings.
"We just have to regroup, get the bats going, and get ready for Kailua," Tom said.
