Iolani rings up another quick ILH rout
Iolani didn't need too much encouragement to end another game quickly against Damien.
If the No. 2 Raiders can regularly respond to giving up runs like they did in a 13-3 win over the Monarchs at Ala Wai Field yesterday, teams might not want to score on them at all.
What looked like a dangerous come-from-behind effort from Damien (2-7) in the third inning, instead fanned the flames of a second five-inning mercy-rule victory for Iolani (9-2) over the Monarchs in as many days.
Iolani beat Damien 10-0 on Monday.
"You don't go out and take anybody cheap," said Iolani coach Dean Yonamine. "We're not going to shut everybody out, there's no way. There's too much talent in the league."
It certainly looked like another blowout early, as the Raiders got every batter up to the plate in the second inning and jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Case Miyahira hit a two-run single to shallow center field, and a throwing error from third to second base two batters later brought in two more runs. Brett Hasegawa capped off the inning with a two-run double.
Then Damien made a game of it -- for a little while, anyway. It got an RBI single from Scotty Taleasea, followed by a two-run hit from Jowyn Alapai to make it 7-3 at the end of the third inning.
That just seemed to get the Raiders mad. They exploded for six runs in the fourth.
Reyn Nagamine drove in two runners on a double, catcher Jarvis Nohara brought in two more on a line drive past third base and Miyahira was clutch again, nearly hitting one out over the right-field fence for a two-run triple. That made it 13-3, and two solid defensive innings from the Raiders is all it took to end it in five.
"Actually (Damien's rally) was a wake-up call 'cause the coaches always tell us that anyone can beat anyone on any given day," said Miyahira, who finished with four RBIs. "So we have to always play hard."
Yonamine said he didn't have to send a message to his team between innings.
"We've been drilling them about it," Yonamine said. "Everybody's tough. It's seven great teams (in the ILH) -- all seven could do extremely well in state tournament play. Everybody proved that in the preseason."
Iolani scored a combined 12 runs with two outs on the board in the second and fourth innings. By comparison, Damien's batters were retired in order in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
"We didn't hit and if you give these good teams extra outs in the inning, they'll kill you," Damien coach John Matias said with a shake of the head. "We do swing the bats on teams, (but Iolani) pumped themselves up again and they got a bunch more runs again, and that was it."
Iolani pitcher CJ Johnson collected five strikeouts in four innings for the win. Damien's Evander Ledward set down five batters in 4 2/3 innings, but gave up five earned runs over the pivotal second and fourth innings to take the loss.
