Lorenzo, Kamehameha sting top-ranked Iolani
The Warriors guard leads the upset with 18 points and key free throws at the end
Tatriana Lorenzo sure picked the right time to step up her game.
The Kamehameha guard poured in 18 points, icing the game with four free throws down the stretch, as the Warriors upset No. 1-ranked Iolani 41-33 last night.
"It was important that Tatri have a big game in her own gym. She struggled early against Punahou and she struggled early tonight," Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said. "Sometimes she tries to do too much instead of letting the game flow to her."
The game definitely flowed for Lorenzo this time. She missed seven of her first eight shots. The Gonzaga-bound senior then hit five of her last six field-goal tries, and shot 6-for-7 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.
"I get super excited. Most of these (Iolani) girls, I play with them in the offseason," Lorenzo said. "Against Punahou, we tensed up, so I tried to tell our team to be loose, don't be different from practice."
The upset was especially surprising since previously-unbeaten Iolani came off a victory over No. 2 Punahou, the same team that won at Kamehameha last week.
"Our concentration was on playing defense. We didn't want them passing inside to the big girls," Cockett said.
Kamehameha's victory tightened up the Interscholastic League of Honolulu race. The sixth-ranked Warriors improved to 3-2 in league play (14-2 overall), and Iolani suffered its first loss of the season and is 4-1 (16-1 overall).
Kamehameha's 2-3 zone disarmed Iolani's long-range bombers. The Raiders shot just 3-for-22 from the 3-point arc (14 percent), the most crucial factor in the game. Iolani was 11-for-51 overall from the field (22 percent) and forced only six turnovers.
"That was their game plan, and it just so happened that our shots didn't fall," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "We tried to make adjustments and get different players in the game."
Another boost for Kamehameha came from Miki Nakamura, who scored three easy layups in the first half, all on fast breaks.
The two teams will meet again tonight in a game that was rescheduled during the deluge of rain three weeks ago.
"It's going to be different," Cockett said. "They'll be at home. I'm going to tell our players to enjoy it for now. They did a great job."
A pensive gathering at Kekuhaupio Gym began to lose steam in the fourth quarter. Iolani switched out of its man defense to a 2-3 zone and opened a 31-27 lead after Hennasea-Sue Tokumura stole the ball and scored on a layup.
Kamehameha bounced back with a pivotal 9-0 run.
Kauiokeola Todd, who blocked three shots, scored inside off a pass from Rhani Kaneaiakala. Lorenzo then scored on a foul shot, and then a breakaway layup off a steal. After she hit the ensuing free throw, the Warriors led 33-31 with 4:20 remaining.
Todd added a free throw and another layup thanks to Kaneaiakala, and the Warriors led 36-31 with 2:40 to go. Iolani got a break when Kaneaiakala turned the ball over with 1:10 left, but continued to draw iron from the perimeter.
Jamie Smith, who finished with eight points and eight rebounds, swished a pair of free throws to bring Iolani within 36-33 with 46 seconds left.
However, Miki Nakamura hit a foul shot, and after an Iolani turnover, Lorenzo put the game out of reach with four free throws in the final 26 seconds.
