Young beats Lajola in Easter Bowl final

Top-seeded Donald Young beat Hawaii's Dennis Lajola 6-3, 6-1 yesterday in the International Tennis Federation's 18-and-under singles championship at the Easter Bowl tournament in Palm Springs, Calif.

The 17-year-old Lajola, the tournament's sixth seed from Aiea, advanced to the final by beating Johnny Hamui of Florida on Saturday.

But Lajola had his hands full with the 16-year-old Young, who also teamed up with Jamie Hunt to win the 18-and-under Easter Bowl doubles title.

Volleyball teams qualify for EVP tour events

Two teams won the Corona Light Extreme Volleyball Professionals qualifying tournament yesterday at Queens Beach.

By winning, the men's and women's winners qualified for EVP beach volleyball tour events on the mainland this summer.

Melvin Mariko and Too Faamausili defeated Curt Vaughan and Max Clini 21-17 for the men's title.

Former UH volleyball standout Victoria Prince teamed up with Janice Harter to beat Mia Neal and Alicia Scalon 21-16 for the women's championship.

Chow takes bronze medal at USA Judo Cup

Honolulu's Daniel Chow won a bronze medal in the USA Judo Cup at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday.

Chow, out of the Hawaii Tenri dojo, competed in the 60kg weight class in the male juvenile B (16 and under) division.

Chow was coming off a silver medal at the Pan-American Junior Championships earlier in the week.
