MangaBento names winners of art contest
By the time this column reaches print, I should be safely sequestered in a room at the Ala Moana Hotel, recovering from a weekend's worth of Kawaii Kon.
But news marches on, and in the case of local anime art group MangaBento, winners of a recent art contest to announce.
In the under-15 age division, 12-year-old Shelly Amine took top honors; Kylie Kansaku, 11, placed second; while Kristina Kau, 7, placed third. In the 15-to-17 age division, Kara Kansaku, 15, claimed first place, followed by Kobey Matsushige and Anolani Bennie, both 16.
The winners were announced at a meeting earlier this month. See pictures of some of the art and winners...

Anolani Bennie, 16, placed third in the 15-to-17 age division with her pencil drawing of characters from the anime and manga series "Hellsing." "It was so nice, we had to go on Google and look at pencil boards to see if it was an actual drawing, an original," MangaBento volunteer Jeff Gaskell said. "It's original."

Publisher bankrupt
I'll readily admit that "boys' love," or yaoi, manga are not really my cup of tea, but I realize that there may be some readers out there who are into that.
Unfortunately for yaoi fans, this time the news is bad -- according to a report on animenewsnetwork.com, Japan's largest yaoi publisher, Biblos, filed for bankruptcy on April 5. The company is best known in America for titles like Be Beautiful's "Kizuna," Kitty Media's "Level C" and Tokyopop's "FAKE." U.S. publishers expect no immediate impact to current releases aside from re-negotiating licenses for long-running titles, according to MangaCast's Ed Chavez ...
In Sunday's 'D&Q'
They may be child detectives, but they possess extraordinary powers -- one harnesses the members of the zodiac, while the other is a Norse god cast down from heaven and trapped in a younger body. Wilma Jandoc investigates "Zodiac P.I." and "Mystical Detective Loki Ragnarok" in the Sunday Today section.
