HPU splits with Hawaii-Hilo
The Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii-Hilo baseball teams split a pair of games yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.
HPU won the first game 14-0 behind freshman Kevin Matsumoto's six-hit shutout and 13 hits for the Sea Warriors' offense.
In the second game, the Vulcans squeezed out a 3-2 win, capitalizing on three errors for three runs in the third inning.
HPU finished its season 24-20.
Rainbow Wahine sweep
The fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team continued its winning ways with victories over No. 10 Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge yesterday in Long Beach, Calif.
Kelly Mason scored three goals and Iefke Van Belkum added two in the first game as the Wahine defeated the host 49ers 10-7. Van Belkum added three more goals against the Matadors in a 10-4 win that pushed the Wahine's record to 14-9 overall and 7-5 in the MPSF.
Warriors finish eighth in golf tournament
Travis Toyama shot a 2-under 70 to lead the Warriors golf team to an eighth-place finish in the Ping Cougar Classic that wrapped up yesterday at Provo, Utah.
Toyama finished tied for 23rd individually at 5 under after shooting a 69 and 70 on the final two days of the three-day tournament. BYU won the team title and Weber State's Barry Schenk was the top individual golfer, finishing at 15 under.
Vulcans rout Silverswords
UH-Hilo's Leo Sing Chow tripled, drove in three runs, and scored three times to lead the Vulcans past Chaminade 9-2 yesterday in a softball game at Carvalho Park.
Sarah Weisskopf gave up just two runs in seven innings in picking up the win. Vanessa Badosa added three hits for the Vulcans, who improved to 27-15. Chaminade dropped to 10-25.
Sea Warriors sweep Seasiders
The Hawaii Pacific University softball team defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii 5-2 and 4-0 in a doubleheader yesterday at Sea Warrior Field in Kaneohe. Dayna Berry pitched five innings to win the first game and Courtney Kessell tossed a two-hit shutout in the nightcap.
Cartwright's birthday celebration tomorrow
A celebration of Alexander Cartwright's 186th birthday will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at his gravesite at Oahu Cemetary.
Cartwright, credited with inventing baseball, was a civic leader in Hawaii, including service as Honolulu fire chief.
