Perreira gets victories No. 500 and No. 501
Hawaii-Hilo softball coach Callen Perreira got milestone victory No. 500 yesterday in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade in Hilo.
The Vulcans (25-15, 8-0 Pacific West) won the first game 4-1 and then gave Perreira win No. 501 with another 4-1 victory in the second game.
Sarah Steele and Sarah Weiskopff combined for an eight-hitter for UHH in the first game, and they got offensive support from Haunani Haasenritter, who belted a solo homer in the fifth inning. Leo Sing Chow followed with a complete-game three-hitter.
The Silverswords dropped to 10-24 and 5-7.
Top-ranked Trojans roll over Rainbow Wahine
No. 1 USC scored six goals in the second quarter to build a big lead and never looked back to beat No. 5 Hawaii 14-7 yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Los Angeles.
Anna Pardo and Kami Craig scored three goals apiece for the Trojans (23-0, 11-0). Kelly Mason scored a match-high four goals for the Rainbow Wahine (12-9, 5-5).
Warriors tied for ninth after Ping first round
Hawaii is tied for ninth after a 1-under 287 yesterday in the first round of the Ping Cougar Classic, hosted by Brigham Young, in Provo, Utah.
Kyle Walters led the way for UH, shooting a 2-under 70.
Fresno State leads the tournament at 13-under 275. Individually, Utah's Dustin Primm after an 8-under 64.
Chow earns silver in judo at Pan-Am games
Honolulu's Daniel Chow earned a silver medal in judo at the Pan-American Junior Championships on Thursday.
Chow lost to Peru's Ronnie Talledo in the 60kg boys juvenile (ages 15-16) final.
The U.S. boys team also won a silver medal, taking second place behind Brazil.
UH's Gilbert ties for eighth at Mt. SAC Relays
Hawaii's Mallory Gilbert tied for eighth place in the high jump yesterday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
Gilbert jumped 5 feet, 5 inches.
The Rainbow Wahine's Thalia Amanakis took 11th place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.87.
