Postal Service to oblige last-minute tax filings
Last-minute federal tax filers will be able to drop off their returns at 26 post offices offering late collection Monday, according to the U.S. Postal Service.
All mail deposited by midnight in collection boxes labeled with a bright orange sign that says "Tax Mail Drop" will receive the April 17 postmark if they are dropped off by midnight. In addition, the post office is offering curbside drop-off at the airport from 6 to 9 p.m. and downtown from 6 to 8 p.m., a Postal Service news release said.
When the April 15 tax deadline falls on a weekend, traditionally the deadline is extended until the Monday after the weekend.
The deadline for state tax returns is Thursday. The post office does not offer extended hours on the state tax deadline day. But state tax workers will be offering curbside drop-off on Halekauwila or Punchbowl street at the Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani Building downtown from 5 p.m. to midnight.
Retail windows at the Airport Post Office will also remain open until 9 p.m. on Monday -- one hour later than usual to accommodate customers who need to purchase stamps or special services.
