While the debate over future dump sites, bacteria-infested water and failing infrastructure continues, few ever take time to consider their own participation in the environmental destruction.
A plate lunch meal today means another Styrofoam box, paper cup, napkins and plastic straw become toast after 15 to 20 minutes' use. Great.
Reversing the cycle can begin with small actions, such as recycling your newspaper and refusing and reusing the plastic bags at grocery stores. At Wahoo's recently, I saw one eco-conscious individual bring in her own bottle for water at the soda machine (don't try it with soft drinks unless you ask; your Big Gulp cup could be more than their soft drink pricing allows).
With small changes, the planet might actually survive beyond your lifetime. Thanks for caring.

Got kids? Most preteens will enjoy "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," a musical based on the popular "Peanuts" comic strip, at Paliku Theatre. Kristopher De La Cruz stars as Charlie Brown, with Pomai Lopez (Lucy), Kimo Kaona (Linus) and Ernest Stevens (Schroeder) stepping forward as major players as the show goes on. Director Kris Fitzgerald keeps the action moving at a pace that accommodates limited attention spans. The cast comes out in costume to meet the audience, pose for photos and sign autographs after the show.
"Charlie Brown" extended its dates with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, and 2 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays through April 23. Tickets are $19, $9 for kids. Call 235-7433 or go to www.eTicketHawaii.com.

I admit I'm a sucker for both Neil Young's music and a good concert movie. And when you can have both, thanks to director Jonathan Demme (who did one of the best concert movies ever in Talking Heads' "Stop Making Sense"), "Neil Young: Heart of Gold" is a must-see. It's screening at the quaint ol' Varsity Twins on University Avenue.
