Injuries hit girls at Roosevelt
First it was the boys team that suffered untimely injuries.
Now, the Roosevelt girls basketball team can't seem to escape the injury bug. In nonconference play, center Shannon Miyashiro and swingman Iwalani Rodrigues suffered ankle injuries. They have since returned and made big contributions for the seventh-ranked Rough Riders.
However, coach Bobby Keanini saw guard Tiana Sugui injure her ankle less than two weeks ago, though she is now playing. Mahie Rattley is out with a hand injury, and backup center Melanie Nakatani is done for the season with an ACL injury.
With just eight players healthy, Keanini's team sometimes shows signs of wear and tear in the late going.
"We were a little fatigued, but we made some key free throws down the stretch," he said after a 50-42 win over Farrington.
UCLA for Onosai:
In the end, the offer was too great to ignore for
Careena Onosai.
The Word of Life Academy senior gave UCLA a commitment to accept a full scholarship offer to join the track and field team yesterday.
"We're proud of her for taking this step," said her mother, Ann.
Onosai, one of the top discus throwers in the nation, visited the UCLA campus with her father, Joe Onosai, two weeks ago. During the visit, UCLA upped its offer from a partial scholarship to a full ride.
For Onosai, who wanted to stay home, it became a dilemma. Hawaii had offered her a walk-on spot to play volleyball as a freshman, and that sport is her first love.
Her dad played football at UH and was a draft choice by the Dallas Cowboys.
At UCLA, however, Careena will not only have a full scholarship, but she'll receive tutelage from some of the nation's top coaches in the discus.
Onosai, who also plays basketball, is a two-time state champion.
Rollin' Raiders:
How good is Iolani?
Through most of nonconference play, the Raiders rarely allowed more than 30 points. That's why Sacred Hearts (34 points) and Maryknoll (31) can take a small bit of consolation despite lopsided losses to the No. 1 Raiders last week.
"We just gotta do everything game by game," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "Our main concern is to take care of ourselves."
Jamie Smith has been a dominant force. The sophomore had 13 points and 13 rebounds at Sacred Hearts, then scored 19 against Maryknoll.
"We work hard as a team, and we earned it," the 5-foot-11 forward said. "We'll play hard to keep our spot."
Low notes:
Sacred Hearts lost a couple of basketball players to academic problems before last week's games. Then coach
Alan Matsui learned that center
Rebecca Debo had to miss a game against Punahou due to a choir class concert.
At 6-2, the steadily-improving Debo is the Lancers' only tall rebounder and defender.
"She needs it for her grade," Matsui said before SHA lost to the second-ranked Buffanblu.
Kahuku on the tube:
ESPN2 will air a special on Kahuku football today at 8 p.m.
