Gammie finishes 16th; Hawaii 12th

Dale Gammie fired a final-round 3-over 74 to finish in a tie for 16th place in the Peg Barnard California Collegiate golf tournament yesterday at Stanford, Calif.

Gammie led the Rainbow Wahine to a 12th-place finish out of 15 teams. Southern California edged California by two shots to win the team standings, and the Trojans' Irene Cho shot a 4-under 67, the lowest round of the tournament, to finish six strokes ahead of South Florida's Jessica Potter in the individual standings.

Silverswords sweep Seasiders in softball

Annaliese Moergeli and Marissa Tybor each tossed complete-game victories to lead Chaminade to a sweep of Brigham Young Hawaii in yesterday's softball doubleheader at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Chaminade's Brandi Sasaki tied the first game at 3 in the sixth inning with a two-run homer, and Michelle Jara's solo blast in the seventh sealed Chaminade's 4-3 victory in game one. Sasaki added three more hits in the second game, and Carolyn Fisher homered as Chaminade pulled it out 7-3.

UH sailors take second at St. Francis Regatta

Joey Pasquali and Becky Mabardy won their race, but the UH coed sailing team took second place at the St. Francis Regatta in California yesterday. Hawaii finished 10 points behind USC, but five points ahead of third-place UC Irvine. The Hawaii women's team scored 185 points and finished sixth in its event.

Soares earns Junior Olympics boxing title

Shayson Soares of Waianae beat James Carlos of Wailuku to win the Junior Olympics boxing title for 10-year-olds in the 60-pound weight class Saturday at Palolo Gym, one of three athletes to win championships in the ring.

Rocky Balala of Central Maui beat Andrew McCue of Evolution Boxing Club for the 95-pound crown (11-year-olds) and German Lee of the Big Island beat Ronick Dancel of Wailuku for the 125-pound title for 15-year-olds.

Ezra Cabang beat Gina Ramos by decision on the undercard.

The card was in doubt on Friday when the Hawaii State Boxing Commission did not give Local Boxing Committee 39 President Ralph Martin his promoter's license, making amateur events in the state illegal until a promoter is found. LBC 39 officials said that an investigator for the state's Regulated Industries Complaints Office was in attendance last night. RICO could not be reached for comment.

» Colleen Loo of Mililani was named to the Women's Pan-American Championships team. She will compete in the in Pan-Am games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, beginning May 24.
