When a game is on the line, Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini loves to see the ball in good hands.
That means Shannon Miyashiro and Tati Beasley, who scored Roosevelt's last six points in the final 2 minutes as the Rough Riders outlasted Farrington 50-42 last night.
The Rough Riders did it despite an off-shooting night by sophomore sensation Iwalani Rodrigues.
"We've got people who can pick up for us," Keanini said. "At the end of the game, Tati picks up that leadership role. As long as the right people are touching the ball at the end, we'll do all right."
Seventh-ranked Roosevelt improved to 6-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East (14-5 overall) by fending off a valiant rally by the visiting Lady Governors in the final quarter.
"We want to play all 32 minutes hard. No matter what the outcome is, as long as there's a good effort," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "We still gotta get in shape, I know that."
The Governors were erratic for the first three quarters, committing more turnovers than baskets against Roosevelt's air-tight man defense. The Rough Riders got nice efforts from reserve posts Noelle Kawelo and Shandree Armstead to stretch its 11-point halftime lead to 40-20 shortly before the end of the third quarter.
Farrington caught fire, scoring 16 points in a row. Deja Bryce's steal and pass to Janiene Telefoni-Sablan for a layup cut the lead to 40-36 with 3:45 remaining. The Govs were still within four after a turnaround jumper by Kapio Alatasi, but they got no closer.
Rodrigues, who struggled from the field, scored her first points of the night on a pair of free throws to give Roosevelt a 44-38 lead with 2:35 left. From that point, Farrington turnovers led to free throws by Miyashiro and Beasley, and the two seniors put the game out of reach.
"We got worried, but we got our heads in the game and kept our composure," said Beasley, who led Roosevelt with 16 points.
More importantly, she hauled down 12 rebounds as the Rough Riders outboarded the taller Govs 42-29. The boardwork was no accident.
"We missed everything, and we're at home, so it's no excuse," Keanini said. "But we've been working on our rebounding. I'm so proud of these girls. They lay it out there every game."
Beasley, at just 5-8, was everywhere under the glass.
"I'm very surprised. They're much bigger than us," she said. "But whatever you do in practice is what happens in a game."
