Ex-police chief enjoying retirement
Question: What ever happened to retired Kauai Police Chief George Freitas?
Answer: Freitas would have been celebrating his 40th year in law enforcement this year, he said recently.
But Freitas, who retired in October 2003 after a number of tumultuous years at the end of his eight years as Kauai's top cop, has been enjoying retirement.
He said he's been serving as a volunteer on numerous civic boards and helping his wife Elizabeth, on occasion, with her private investigative firm, Freitas and Freitas of Lihue.
Elizabeth Freitas, a polygrapher and former law enforcement officer herself, has numerous state contracts for lie-detector services, the former chief said. The couple do investigative work for attorneys, but only on cases not involving his tenure as chief, he added.
Freitas, who took the Kauai chief position in 1995 after decades of service with the Richmond, Calif., police force, has also been giving back to his adopted community.
He said he's served on the board of the Arc on Kauai, a nonprofit organization that provides services for children and adults who are mentally challenged.
"That's been very rewarding," Freitas added.
He also serves on the board of the Police Athletic League, adding that "I kind of tag along and help" officer Mark Ozaki, who's instrumental in the program, when needed.
Freitas continues to be involved in his church, Immaculate Conception, and he's the chairman of the Catholic Charities board on Kauai.
In his free time, he's been reading, traveling and "my wife convinced me to pick up golf, and I'll never forgive her for it," Freitas said.
