UH-Hilo softball sweeps Seasiders
Hawaii-Hilo pitchers Britni Rodriguez and Sarah Steele silenced Brigham Young-Hawaii's bats to lead the Vulcans to a doubleheader sweep of the Seasiders yesterday at the UHH softball field.
Rodriguez scattered six hits and struck out five in UH-Hilo's 3-1 win in the first game. Steele tossed a one-hitter and struck out 10 Seasiders in a 4-0 victory in the second game.
UH-Hilo improved to 17-14. BYUH fell to 8-22.
UH fifth in water polo rankings
The University of Hawaii water polo team held steady at No. 5 in this week's National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Top 20 poll.
UH (11-8, 5-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) lost to No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 UCLA at home last week and next faces No. 4 Loyola Marymount on April 13 in Los Angeles.
Sisters earn national wrestling titles
Sisters Teshya and Teniya Alo of Ewa Beach won their respective age-group titles at last weekend's U.S. Girls Wrestling Association National Championship in Detroit.
The two Punahou School students competed in the elementary school division. Teshya, 8, is also a Hawaii state champion in judo, wrestling and jujitsu, and Teniya, 7, has a state title in judo.
In high school action, Iolani's Keiko Akamine (100 pounds) and Punahou's Kara Takasaki (138) finished fifth. Iolani's Olivia Fatongia was sixth (165), Kailua's Kiele Lehel was seventh (165) and Kalaheo's Stephanie Geltmacher (134) was ninth. Iolani's Carla Watase (105) and Kailua's Monique Dilliner (144) finished 10th. And Iolani's Megan Morisada (105) placed 11th.
ESPN golf challenge qualifier next week
Mililani Golf Club hosts the local qualifier Wednesday for ESPN's National Golf Challenge.
Presented locally by Sports Radio 1420-AM, the event is an amateur two-person better-ball tournament.
Entry fee is $95, which includes Callaway HX Tour Balls and a subscription to Golf Magazine.
