Nike kicks off campaign to recycle shoes
The city has teamed up with Nike on the company's Reuse-A-Shoe campaign, which could earn schools $3,000 in Nike equipment.
The school that collects the most recycled shoes will win a Nike equipment package for their physical education department.
Nike is also inviting kids and adults to turn old shoes into works of art. Winners of the Creative Kicks Art Contest will receive a free pair of shoes.
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin, MidWeek, Matson and King Kalakaua Plaza have also partnered with Nike in its campaign.
Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program was started up in 1993 as a way to recycle used athletic shoes of any brand and any defective Nike shoes.
The shoes are ground up to create raw materials under the Nike Grind brand and are made into new sport surfaces such as basketball and tennis courts, according to Nike.
