There are few desserts as mysterious and tempting as a red velvet cake. The words themselves conjure imagery of something delectable, plush and sinful, a cake that after just one nibble will cause the most fervent cake eater to shun all others, whether dobash, chantilly or dream.
Well, after that buildup, is it any wonder that red velvet cakes, are, in actuality, quite plain? If not for a touch of cocoa and red food coloring, it would simply be a white cake. Knowing that doesn't deter fans of the elusive red velvet cake. Typically, someone has to care about you enough to bake it up special.
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, though known for its liquid offerings at Manoa Marketplace, Koko Marina and Kailua Town Center, also offers an array of pastry accompaniments. Among them is a cylindrical red velvet cake made for one or two to share. The color is more of a deep pink red-orange than red. At $3.99, it comes with a swirl of cream cheese frosting, which may be the real secret behind the cake's success.

Sneak previews are always great and the IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre is having one at 6 p.m. Sunday at Kailua Beach. Hopefully the weekend will bring sunny skies, and after a relaxing day at the beach, I can catch a glimpse of the dancers' new production, "Electric Blue," which is set to premiere from April 21 to 23 at Hawaii Theatre. Tickets for those shows run $25 to $45, so catching the free preview will help me decide if I want to attend the actual show. For more information, log on to
iona360.com. For those who already know they want tickets, call 528-0506.

Once again, there are a lot of choices this weekend. If you're willing to brave the crowds at First Fridays, give the opening reception of "Metro Hawaii" a try at thirtyninehotel. Then there's the Bouncing Souls at Pink Cadillac on Saturday, and the Kanye West show on Sunday. I'll probably be at all three, proving once again that there is more variety than ever in Honolulu nightlife. Have fun!
