Morgado a hit for Whittier baseball
Matt Morgado was named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for his exploits on the baseball diamond March 20-26.
Morgado (Kamehameha '03), a sophomore designated hitter for the Whittier College Poets, hit .765 (13-for-17) in four games against UMass-Dartmouth and Occidental. He had a two-run homer, two doubles and 18 total bases for a 1.059 slugging percentage. He also walked twice and did not strike out.
Overall, Morgado is hitting .396 (34-for-86) with 21 RBIs.
» Ryan Brilhante (Saint Louis '05) provided the spark for the St. Martin's College Saints in their 5-4, 10-inning win over visiting Hawaii Pacific last Saturday.
The freshman outfielder singled with two outs in the bottom of the 10th, stole second and scored the game-winning run on a single by Vince Maughn.
Shim court leader for Cal Lutheran
Tiffany Shim (Kamehameha), a junior guard at Cal Lutheran, is ranked second in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 4.91 assists a game. The second-team all-conference selection averaged 8.2 points per game. Shim's high point was making the game-winning basket with 3.1 seconds left to seal the league's automatic NCAA berth.
Also contributing to the Regals' 19-7 record were junior guard Caroline Beddow (Mid-Pacific), who averaged 4.0 ppg in 21 games and freshman guard Cheryl Lee (Maryknoll), who averaged 4.9 ppg in 25 appearances.
» Christian Basilio finished his four-year career with Webster University fifth on the Gorloks' all-time blocked-shot list with 60. The 6-foot-6 forward from Hilo blocked 27 shots this year, the school's fifth best in a season.
Basilio averaged 8.5 points and four rebounds a game and started 24 of 25 games for the 12-14 Gorloks, an NCAA Division II team.
Bryce Oliveira, a 6-1 freshman guard from Hana, played in just two games, but made all five of his 3-point attempts.
» Becky Hogue (Punahou '03) started 15 of 24 games in her first season with the 6-21 Columbia Lions. The 6-1 junior forward averaged 5.5 points a game. She was second on the team with 5.4 rebounds a game and 14 blocked shots.
» Christine Takara (Punahou '05) played in nine games for the 9-19 San Diego Toreros. The 5-6 freshman guard was 1-for-2 on field goals and 1-for-2 from the line. She also blocked a shot and had two steals.
Swimmers fare well at NCAA meet
Hongzhe Sun and Noa Sakamoto from Stanford, Nick Borreca from Florida and Mark Eckert from California competed in the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship at Atlanta, March 23-25.
Sun (Iolani '03) was second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 40.25 seconds (second all time at Stanford), sixth in the 100 back (46.88) and 24th in the 200 individual medley (1:47.35). He also was on Stanford's third-place 400 medley relay team.
Sakamoto (Punahou '04) finished 31st in the 1,650 freestyle (16:04.74) and 40th in 500 free (4:36.06).
Borreca (Punahou '02) was 24th in the 50 free (19.78, the second fastest time in Florida history) and 18th in the 100 free (43.52, ninth fastest in Gator history). He was on the 400 free relay that finished sixth, the 200 medley relay that came in seventh and the 200 free relay that was 10th.
Eckert (Iolani '04) placed 19th in the 200 back (1:45.74) and 32nd in the 200 IM (1:47.99).
