Chang named UH corporate sales director
Stuart Chang has been named Corporate Sales Director for the Hawaii Athletics Department, UH announced yesterday.
His duties will include overseeing UH's Corporate Partner Program, including sponsor inventory, packaging, sales and corporate relations, along with responsibilies in marketing, advertising, promotions and ticket sales.
Chang was one of the several senior managers who resigned in protest in February after KHON was sold to Montecito Broadcast Group. Prior to his time at KHON, Chang worked at KHNL/KFVE for 17 years as a senior sales and marketing executive and general sales manager. At KHNL/KFVE, he had experience with UH sports telecasts and their accompanying advertisements, signage and promotions.
He is also the co-creator and producer of "Hot Hawaiian Nights."
Junior Olympics Championships Saturday
The 2006 USA Boxing Hawaii Junior Olympic Championships are set for Saturday at Palolo Gym.
Winners in the 15-16-year-old division will advance to the national tournament this summer.
Bouts begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.
No. 2 Pepperdine stops 'Bows' tennis streak
No. 2 Pepperdine shut out Hawaii 6-0 yesterday at Malibu, Calif., stopping UH's men's tennis winning streak at six matches.
The Waves won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. The teams decided to play singles first due to threatening weather conditions.
UH No. 1 Sascha Heineman saw his personal 10-match winning streak snapped by Scott Doerner, the nation's No. 6 player.
At No. 2 singles, Hawaii's Bryon Weinberg came closest to winning, with three match points in the third set. But Pepperdine took it to a tiebreaker and won 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2).
The Rainbows come home to close out the regular season against Hawaii Pacific on Monday and Azusa Pacific on Tuesday.
UH-Hilo sweeps Seasiders
Hawaii-Hilo won both ends of a home softball doubleheader with Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday, beating the Seasiders 12-0 and 4-2.
The Vulcans enjoyed a 10-run third inning -- which featured two home runs and five RBIs from Vanessa Badosa -- in the first game. UH-Hilo's Leo Sing Chow threw a one-hitter.
In the second game BYUH's Holly Bjork had a home run and a key hit late, but UH-Hilo's Sarah Weisskopf went the distance for the win.
UH-Hilo improves to 15-14 on the season. BYUH is 8-20.
Vulcans split with San Jose State
Hawaii-Hilo split a baseball doubleheader with visiting San Jose State yesterday, losing to the Spartans 4-2 in the opener but rebounding to win the nightcap 4-3.
UH-Hilo is now 11-25 on the season, the Spartans of the Western Athletic Conference are now 21-13.
In the first game the Vulcans were rough on Spartans starter Matt Winck, taking a 2-0 lead. But SJSU responded with a three-run fourth inning and never looked back. Starter Tyson Usui took the loss for the Vulcans.
In the second game, UH-Hilo had a strong outing from the bullpen, as Vinnie Biggs got the win with 4 1/3 innings of work and Eddie Gutierrez closed it out for a save. Tyler Curtis and Kyler Wartman had three hits each, and Kyle Correia added three RBIs for the Vulcans.
