Break doesn't slow Iolani
The last time Iolani's girls played a basketball game, George Mason had just won its first NCAA Tournament contest, Kauai had just suffered a dam crisis and Denzel Washington had yet to seek the "Inside Man" on the silver screen.
Fortunately, the 18-day break did nothing to slow the top-ranked Raiders, who coasted past Sacred Hearts 63-34 last night. Sophomore Jamie Smith scored 13 points and hauled in 13 rebounds to lead Iolani in its Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener. Center Meagan Burton scored 14 points and hustled for six boards off the bench against her former school.
"Being laid off for the last 2 1/2 weeks, we got kind of stagnant," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "We just gotta do everything game by game now."
Stagnant, maybe, but the Raiders were certainly sharp last night. They shot 47 percent from the field and committed just 11 turnovers. Though they shot only 2-for-13 from the 3-point arc, the Raiders won the battle on the boards 36-26. Keilyn Fujioka amassed 10 points, six caroms and two steals, and Sarah Turgeon added five rebounds for Iolani's talented frontcourt.
"Everybody rebounded and scored off the bench," said Smith, a 5-foot-11 forward. "Practice for us is like games. We just worked together, and we worked hard at practice."
Samantha Saito led Sacred Hearts with nine hard-earned points. Waves of Iolani defenders kept coming at the senior guard, resulting in Saito shooting just 3-for-17 from the field. As a team, the Lancers finished at 28 percent (12-for-43).
"Their two guards are really good," Takara said. "What got them was our depth."
Sacred Hearts dropped to 1-1 in league play (9-3 overall), but had some bright spots. Center Rebecca Debo grabbed 11 rebounds, and freshman Raecha-Ann Kauahikaua had eight points, six rebounds and four steals.
Iolani's long break was extended a little more after its scheduled ILH opener against Kamehameha last Friday was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Raiders showed their depth and wore down the short-handed Lancers, who played without three key players. Two are out with academic probation and another, Cara Smith, is sidelined with an ACL injury.
"We came out a little flat, a little complacent. You can't do that against a great team like Iolani," Lancers coach Alan Matsui said. "But our girls made adjustments in the second half, and they never quit. We played our kind of game. I told them, don't worry about trying to catch up. Just play one basket at a time. I think they learned that if they do that, we can play with most teams."
