Ching selected MLS Player of the Week
Former Kamehameha standout Brian Ching has been named Major League Soccer Player of the Week for his performance against the visiting Colorado Rapids last Sunday.
Playing in the inaugural match in front of 25,462 fans for the Houston Dynamo (formerly the San Jose Earthquakes), Ching scored four goals.
It was the ninth time in MLS history that a player scored four or more goals in a match.
» Duke Hashimoto, drafted by the Columbus (Ohio) Crew this year, is on the roster but not with the MLS team while he finishes school at Southern Methodist.
Costi named WAC Pitcher of the Week
Hawaii right-hander Justin Costi is the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after getting a win and no decision in starts last week against UC Santa Barbara and San Jose State.
The senior from Elk Grove, Calif., allowed just two runs and seven hits in 13 innings. Costi walked six and struck out 15. The win came in the 3-0 shutout of UCSB.
USA Volleyball honors Vivas
Punahou School graduate Sandy Vivas is one of eight individuals who will receive the Trailblazer Award by USA Volleyball tomorrow.
Vivas was the executive director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association for 17 years and played a key role in developing the Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship as well as the establishment of the grant program to encourage schools to add men's volleyball. During her tenure (1983-2000), Vivas helped build up the AVCA from a base of 250 members to 3,200, and a budget of $50,000 to over $800,000.
Vivas is also in the AVCA's Hall of Fame, part of the class of 2004.
Spartans drop Vulcans in baseball
San Jose State beat Hawaii-Hilo 9-1 in a baseball game yesterday at Wong Stadium.
Greg Shannon and Steven Vidal combined on a seven-hitter for the Spartans. Ryan Angel and Sam Hall both had three hits to lead the 14-hit San Jose State (21-12) attack.
Chris Campbell and Kyler Wartman had two hits each for the Vulcans (10-24).
Rainbow Wahine beat Silverswords in tennis
The Hawaii women's tennis team defeated Division II Chaminade yesterday, 7-0, to improve to 2-16-1.
The Rainbow Wahine dominated the short-handed Silverswords, who only had four players. Chaminade forfeited the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches.
Online registration today for marathon
Online registration for the Honolulu Marathon begins today at www.honolulumarathon.org.
The entry fee is $60 for Hawaii residents until Oct. 27, $95 for out-of-state entries. The fee rises for all entries to $105 from Oct. 28 to Nov. 10, and to $125 from Nov. 11 to Dec. 9.
More than 4,300 entries have already been received through the mail for the Dec. 10 race.
Lambert, Metzger second in AVP opener
The top-seeded duo of Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger fell to No. 2-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, 25-23, 21-16, in last Sunday's final of the AVP Cuervo Gold Crown Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Open.
The two former Punahou standouts won $13,400 for the runner-up effort.
