Hawaii beats New Zealand in exhibition
Kristy Bignall and Kristine Swanson scored three goals each to lead Hawaii over New Zealand 15-7 in an exhibition water polo match yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine finish their regular season in California with matches at Loyola Marymount (April 13), USC (April 14), Long Beach State (April 15) and against Cal State Northridge (April 15) at LBSU.
Hawaii sweeps SJSU in doubleheader
Hawaii beat San Jose State 2-0 and 3-0 in a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Justine Smethurst pitched a two-hitter and Tanisha Milca went 2-for-2 for the Rainbow Wahine (21-13, 5-0) in the first game.
In the second game, UH's Courtney Baughman pitched a three-hitter and Brandi Peiler went 2-for-2 with a double.
The Spartans dropped to 13-19 and 2-3.
» Hawaii Pacific lost two games on the final day of the Tournament of Champions softball tournament yesterday in California.
Host Cal State Stanislaus beat HPU 3-2 and Cal State Monterey Bay blanked the Sea Warriors 8-0.
Dayna Berry had a two-run homer for Hawaii Pacific in the first game. Kara Wedemeyer went 3-for-4 to lead the Sea Warriors in the second game.
Dacanay earns Division III basketball honor
Former Punahou standout Shanna-Lei Dacanay was named by Women's Division III News to the women's basketball D-III All-America All-Freshman team.
Dacanay, a guard for Washington University in St. Louis, averaged 6.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. She also had 43 steals, 97 assists, 51 turnovers and seven blocked shots for the Bears.
Bela Karolyi to visit local gym
Legendary gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi will visit Island Tumblers Gymnastics tomorrow to promote the upcoming Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships.
The coach, who led the 1996 U.S. women's Olympic team to a gold medal, will be on hand from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. to sign autographs and speak about the April 13-15 event at the Neal Blaisdell Arena and the Hawaii Convention Center.

UH to host alcohol education programs
The University of Hawaii athletic department will host two alcohol education programs this week at the Stan Sheriff Center. Both programs, "Play Hard, Party Hard" and "Courage to Care," will feature professional speaker Carolyn Cornelison, Ph.D., and are being sponsored by Anheuser-Busch.
The "Play Hard, Party Hard" program is today at 7:30 p.m. The "Courage to Care" program is Wednesday and will focus on recognizing the warning signs of out-of-control drinking and ways to help friends who may be developing unhealthy drinking habits.
