Mililani's Christina Korodan has made a habit of having big games against Radford coach David Lane. But this time, it was the coach who got the last laugh.
Korodan finished with a game-high 19 points, but took just four shots in the second half as the Rams got a huge fourth-quarter lift from sophomore Marlena Malepeai to hold on for a 36-31 victory last night at James Alegre Gym.
The win moves the Rams (5-0) into a tie with Leilehua for first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division.
Malepeai scored all eight of Radford's fourth-quarter points and finished with 13 for the game as the Rams held on despite committing 21 turnovers and converting just 10 of 24 free throws.
"We've been struggling with our free throws," Lane said. "When we run our spread offense, we're either going to get a layup or get fouled, and they've got to knock them (free throws) down."
Fortunately for Radford, the Trojans (3-2) were equally bad from the line, hitting just 13 of 30 free throws, and had 20 giveaways.
"We got lucky," Lane said. "They are a tough team with some tough athletes, and they don't usually struggle from the line like that."
Malepeai added seven rebounds, while point guard Kamia Smith finished with nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. She also came up big on defense, helping shut down Korodan. The senior had 13 of her 19 points in the second half, but most of them came from the foul line as the Rams tightened their defense, especially above the 3-point line.
"After the first half, we knew exactly what they were going to do," Smith said. "We switched on all the picks and stayed on her."
"I've been coaching against (Korodan) for four years now and she always seems to play well against us," Lane said. "We tried to stay with her, but didn't want to foul her."
Korodan, who nailed all 11 free throws in a game last week against Pearl City, finished 8-for-13 from the line. The rest of the team was a combined 5-for-17.
Despite all that, the Trojans still had a chance to win. Trailing 28-21 heading into the fourth quarter, Mililani pulled to within two on a free throw by Lia Nishikura with a minute to play. But each team turned the ball over in the next 15 seconds, and Malepeai came up with a huge block on a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left that iced the game.
"I was just hoping it wasn't a foul," Malepeai said.
Radford and Leilehua will meet Wednesday at Radford. Mililani's next game is the same day at Kapolei.
