Marciel shuts down Warriors
Kamehameha's pitching staff has been awfully tough the past two games.
Last night, Iolani's Wally Marciel was just a little bit tougher.
The senior left-hander scattered four hits and escaped a couple of late-inning jams as the top-ranked Raiders earned a 1-0 victory over the Warriors at soggy Aloha Stadium.
Kamehameha, which shut out Saint Louis 1-0 on Friday, got solid pitching performances from freshman Christopher Pascual and junior Ashkhon Kuhaulua yesterday. But Marciel's complete-game performance was just enough to keep Iolani (4-0) undefeated in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball race.
"We tell (the Iolani players) we're not the kind of the team that's going to go out and score nine or 10 runs a game," Iolani coach Dean Yonamine said. "This is the kind of game we are designed to play."
Chris Johnson's two-out single in the top of the third inning scored Travis Nishioka with what proved to be the decisive run and the Raiders defense made key plays in the final inning to preserve the shutout.
"I didn't think about that until after the game was over," said Marciel, who struck out six and walked three. "Knowing Kamehameha, I knew at any point in the game they could come back, so I had to keep working hard and the defense got my back."
Pascual went 2 2/3 innings for Kamehameha (1-3) and left the game following Johnson's RBI single. Kuhaulua shut down the Raiders the rest of the way, allowing two hits and retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced.
"I couldn't ask for anything more," Kamehameha coach Vern Ramie said. "They pitched a good game, they deserved a better fate, but Wally pitched a good game, too. ... Wally matched us pitch for pitch. You just tip your hat to him."
Iolani got all the offense it needed after Nishioka was hit by a pitch with one out in the third. He stole second and went to third on Brett Hasegawa's grounder. Johnson then lined an offering from Pascual into right-center field to score Nishioka.
Marciel kept the Kamehameha hitters off balance by running his fastball on the inside half of the plate and getting the Warriors to chase the curveball.
"I was just taking it one batter at a time, focusing on my target and hitting the glove," Marciel said.
Kamehameha put runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings, but came away one hit short each time. Marciel came up with two strikeouts to strand a Warriors runner at third base in the bottom of the fifth.
After leaving two runners on base in the sixth, Marciel gave up a single and a walk to open the seventh. Kamehameha's Aaron Nichols then laid down a bunt, which was scooped up by Iolani first baseman Reyn Nagamine who fired to third to get the lead runner.
"We'd been working on that all week," Marciel said. "We knew they were going to bunt, so we called a bunt coverage and our first baseman did a good job of executing it."
"It was big play," Ramie said. "They had the rotation play on and it wasn't a bad bunt, but they executed a little better than we did. That's the difference in the ballgame, the team that executes the best in those crucial situations is usually going to come out on top."
Marciel then struck out Vance Nobriga, and Stuart Kam hit a slow grounder to second baseman Brennan Nacario and Nagamine scooped the throw out of the dirt just ahead of Kam to end the game.
