Roosevelt turns to zone to beat Kahuku
For now, at least, defense is anchoring offensive juggernaut Roosevelt.
The Rough Riders showed a new wrinkle, using a zone to blanket Kahuku for a 44-39 win last night at Roosevelt's gym.
Sixth-ranked Roosevelt improved to 4-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East play (12-4 overall). Sophomore Iwalani Rodrigues scored 18 points and senior Tati Beasley pumped in 17 to power the Rough Riders.
"Everybody worked hard at practice. We knew Kahuku would be strong," Rodrigues said. "We were having butterflies before the game. I was all nervous."
Kahuku, ranked No. 8, slipped to 1-2 in league play (8-5 overall). All three of the Lady Raiders' games in league play have been on the road, all within the past week.
"They spread themselves out in the lanes. They're disciplined, a great defensive team," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said. "I expected a big challenge at the guard position, but it turned into a rebounding game."
Kahuku coach Val Anae saw room for optimism.
"Our defense is coming along. We're struggling a little bit on offense," she said. "We're expecting a lot more man (defense), but people are zoning us."
Roosevelt opened the game in a man-to-man defense, but foul problems for center Shannon Miyashiro triggered a switch to a 2-3 zone.
That helped limit the scoring prowess of Kahuku senior Artevia Wily, who finished with only 12 points. Brittney Fesolai also had 12 points.
"We're not a zone team. We'd rather be up-tempo and have a lot of pressure," Keanini said. "But we got into foul trouble, had a couple of dings."
Anae gave kudos to Beasley and Rodrigues.
"Eleven (Beasley) and 14 (Rodrigues) played really well. Their team was outhustling us, scrapping for the ball, and they're smart," she said. "Their coach did a great job."
Beasley suffered a leg cramp, then aggravated an ankle injury in the fourth quarter. Guard Tiana Sugui suffered a left ankle sprain, also in the final quarter.
Both teams struggled from the free-throw line. Roosevelt made 11 of its 23 tries, while Kahuku was 10-for-19.
The Rough Riders led 40-31 after a pair of foul shots by Miyashiro with 3:35 remaining, but Kahuku chipped away. Back-to-back buckets by Camilla Ah-Hoy brought the Lady Raiders within 40-35 with 2:05 left.
A trey by Fesolai cut the lead to 42-39 with 35 seconds to go, but Roosevelt burned 20 seconds off the clock before Kahuku finally fouled Rodrigues.
She answered with a pair of free throws to ice the game with 15 seconds left.
"I'm happy, but it's not exaggerated," Rodrigues said. "We have a lot more teams to play."
