Rainbows break out against Vulcans
Hawaii responds to its coach with a season-high 13 runs
HILO » Coach Mike Trapasso's pointed comments to the Rainbows after Tuesday's baseball game against the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans yielded the desired results yesterday.
"We were not in cruise control today. We had pretty good intensity from the start. We just needed to break things open and Luis (Avila) did that," Trapasso said.
Avila's two-run homer over the center-field fence in the fifth inning gave the Rainbows (20-8) a 5-1 lead. They followed up with seven runs in the next inning en route to a 13-5 victory over the Vulcans (9-18) at Francis Wong Stadium.

Justin Frash had five hits, joining Matt Inouye as the only 'Bows to accomplish that this season. It was Frash's team-leading 11th multi-hit game. He also knocked in four runs.
Left-hander Mark Rodrigues pitched six innings of two-hit ball and freshman right-hander Jayson Kramer came on in the eighth to close after Keahi Rawlins got into trouble.
"Mark was the best I've seen him this year. His slider, which has deserted him for a month, was the best it has been. That makes a big difference and he was able to settle into a rhythm," Trapasso said.
The Rainbows tagged Vulcan starter Ryan Olszewski for nine singles in the first three innings, but also hit into three double plays and settled for just two runs.
In the first inning, one-out singles by Derek DuPree and Frash were wasted when Avila hit into an inning-ending double play.
Singles by Inouye, Landon Hernandez and Eli Christensen produced the first UH run in the second, but Joe Spiers' double-play ball to short ended the inning.
The Vulcans (9-18) tied the score in the bottom of the second. Rodrigues walked leadoff batter Tyler Curtis. He was safe at second on Alvis Satele's bouncer to Avila, who threw wide to second base. Kyler Wartman's high bouncer over third into left scored Curtis.
UH broke the tie with one run in the third when Robbie Wilder, DuPree and Frash singled to open the inning. However, on Avila's fly to right, DuPree was tagged out at home for the third UHH double play.
UH escaped the DP mode in the fifth when Wilder walked and was sacrificed to second by DuPree. Frash singled Wilder home, then scored ahead of Avila, whose fourth homer came off a one-ball pitch.
The Rainbows sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth with pinch hitter Kris Sanchez's bases-clearing double to center field the most damaging hit.
Rawlins had a 1-2-3 seventh inning thanks to the Rainbows' third double play.
The Vulcans loaded the bases in the eight on Chris Campbell's leadoff double, a walk and error by Nate Young at short. Rawlins fanned the next batter, but Chris Stephenson singled in two runs and Curtis' single to center brought in another. After getting the second out, Rawlins walked two more batters to force home UHH's fifth run.
"We have an error, then ground balls that found holes. Keahi fell out of rhythm and couldn't throw strikes. It wasn't as bad an inning as it looked," Trapasso said.
"Jayson took a step forward today. He had a good curve, was aggressive and you could see him get comfortable. He will be a big factor in our pitching plans for years to come."
The 13 runs are a season high for the 'Bows.
Hawaii opens a three-game, nonconference series against UC Santa Barbara with a 1 p.m. game Sunday followed by 6:35 p.m. games Monday and Tuesday at Les Murakami Stadium.
