Pipeline group gets Scruples
SMALLER is better -- that's the new mantra for one Waikiki nightspot.
After 22 years of ownership, Fred Piluso has turned over the reins at Scruples Nightclub to the hui that owns Pipeline Cafe. Mark Broadhurst confirmed the transaction last week via e-mail.
"Yes, your eyes haven't deceived you," he wrote. "We are no longer a beach club, we are a casual Waikiki nightclub."
According to the e-mail, Scruples was remodeled and the entire staff replaced. Your first chance to check things out is tomorrow night, when the club opens to the public at 9 p.m.
"While other clubs are getting bigger and louder, we've decided to go smaller, more comfortable and cozy," Broadhurst wrote. "(And) the party goes until 4 a.m." ...
CONGRATS TO Giselle Pineda, who won last week's "Sexy Shoe Diva" contest at Macy's Ala Moana.
I had a blast judging the competition with SMART Magazine's Molly Watanabe and MidWeek's Yu Shing Ting (I know, I know -- what was I doing there?). 102.7 Da Bomb's DJ Kool E provided the tunes as we evaluated contestants and models pranced on stage. I was also impressed by KHON's Manolo Morales and Trini Kaopuiki, who did a fantastic job entertaining the crowd as hosts for the contest.
Others spotted at Macy's on Thursday: SMART's Amy Alston and Sarah Honda, clothing designer Zana Akane Tsutakawa, Rick Rock Productions' Cy Shimabukuro, "Countdown Hawaii" hostess Olena Rubin and Honolulu Streetwear Company's Christa Curtiswittmeier ...
BIG UP to the promoters behind "X-1: Judgement Day," which took place Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena.
You could tell they put a lot more effort in this time -- expensive lighting above the ring, a fancy crane-operated camera and tons of ring girls were a definite step up from the last event I attended.
There were a number of entertaining fights: Shane Carwin beat KC Jackson in just 22 seconds with a guillotine choke, while Jay Carter impressed with a second round TKO over Josh Ferreira. Mark Moreno also got a big win over Ross Ebanez in the co-main event.
The funniest part of the night, however, had to be at the very beginning when I got dissed by Amber Stone. The Dis-N-Dat hostess had just taped a segment in the ring when I tried to say hello, but she breezed right by -- and didn't even bother to stay for the fights ...
