Kalaheo’s Canon gets help to beat Kahuku
There will be no one-woman show at Kalaheo this spring.
In fact, the Lady Mustangs proved last night that there will be plenty of help for standout guard Shanadee Canon. Kalaheo outlasted Kahuku 76-74 in double overtime thanks in part to a 27-point effort by senior Kendra Fischer.
Fischer, a small forward, sat on the bench for most of last year.
"This is the first game that I've really stepped up. It's my last year, and knowing that Kahuku is the defending champ, I wanted to show coach what I could do," she said.
Fischer fouled out in the fourth quarter, leaving Canon to come up with the biggest play of the game in the second overtime. With the game tied at 74 on the final possession, Canon sliced through two defenders, bounced off a third Lady Raider and hit an off-balance 12-footer on the right wing to give Kalaheo a 76-74 lead with 3.6 seconds left.
Kahuku's Artevia Wily, who finished with 29 points, missed a 52-foot heave at the final buzzer.
Kalaheo, ranked sixth in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, is 2-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East play (6-4 overall).
Fifth-ranked Kahuku fell in its regular-season opener (7-4 overall) despite Wily's performance. The senior, like Canon, had some struggles, shooting 8-for-30 from the field.
Canon had just eight first-half points, but finished with 25 points, including 12 in the two extra periods. She shot 7-for-14 from the field to overcome six turnovers against a swarming, unrelenting Kahuku man defense.
She shot 6-for-8 from the free-throw line in the two overtimes.
"We learned that these kinds of situations are important, that we have to take care of the ball," Canon said.
Kaliko Kepa added 10 points, nine rebounds and a steadying presence on the floor.
"She's undersized and grabbing boards," coach Chico Furtado said. "Delicia (Wilson) did a good job handling the ball for us."
Kahuku's first-year coach, Val Anae, sees room for improvement.
"We did some things right, and some things not so good," she said. "They played well. They made free throws and controlled the boards, and when you do that in a close game, you'll get the win."
Anae was clear about her feelings regarding officiating.
"We had four girls foul out and they only had three," she said.
In actuality, three Lady Raiders fouled out. The foul count was 18 for Kahuku and 15 for the home team, Kalaheo.
"When Chico said (to the officials), 'You're in my house, you can't call that stuff,' that was uncalled for. Right after that, he got two calls," said Anae, a two-time All-American at BYU during the 1980s. "We aren't gonna have this kind of stuff when they come to Kahuku."
After three early lead changes, the Lady Raiders took command with a 17-6 run in the final 5 minutes of the first half. The burst came moments after Anae did a five-for-five substitution. Reserve Krystal Manguba-Glover sank two mid-range jumpers to spark the run, which gave Kahuku a 33-24 lead.
Wily picked up her third personal foul with 42 seconds left in the half. She scored 17 points by intermission.
Kalaheo had difficulty against Kahuku's man-to-man defense, committing 13 turnovers by halftime.
