Rough Riders heat up
Too much fun in the sun nearly gave Roosevelt a frightful night.
Iwalani Rodrigues scored six of her game-high 12 points in the final quarter as No. 7 Roosevelt rallied past Moanalua 35-32 last night at the Menehunes' gym.
Rodrigues, a sophomore, added seven rebounds as Roosevelt improved to 2-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East play (10-4 overall). Shannon Miyashiro added nine points and five boards.
Roosevelt came back after trailing by nine in the first half. The Rough Riders were flat for much of the game after the senior class went to an all-day outing at a water park.
"That had nothing to do with it," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said. "Moanalua took it really hard to the basket. Moanalua caused a lot of turnovers. They outhustled us. You gotta give their coach a lot of credit."
Moanalua dropped to 1-1 (6-6 overall) in its bid to upset the most skilled team in the East. Jade Miller led the Menehunes with eight points.
"I think this game helps us with our confidence," Menehunes coach Rick Gonsalves said. "I think we played the best we could. What we needed was one more basket."
Rodrigues came up with two key plays with her team down 32-29 with 1:36 left. She scored a layup off a feed from Tiana Sugui, and then tipped away a Moanalua inbound pass at midcourt. That allowed Dianna Zane to score on a breakaway layup to give the Rough Riders the lead for good, 33-32, with 19 seconds remaining.
Miller was whistled for traveling on an inbound play with 6.6 seconds left. With no time elapsing, Rodrigues was fouled and added two free throws to give Roosevelt a three-point lead.
Moanalua still had plenty of time left, allowing the Menehunes to dribble the length of the court. Jamie Ronolo's 3-point try from the left wing was long as time expired.
"We got lucky, actually," Keanini said. In all, Roosevelt committed 19 turnovers and shot 11-for-38 from the field (29 percent).
Moanalua shot 36 percent from the field (13-for-36). Britni Ronolo hustled for nine rebounds, but Roosevelt won the battle on the boards, 26-18.
The Rough Riders were extremely flat in the first half, which was good news for the energetic Menehunes. Roosevelt committed seven first-quarter turnovers against Moanalua's man-to-man defense, and the Menes scored eight points in a row to take a 9-2 lead into the second quarter.
Roosevelt pulled within two after Rodrigues scored on a follow shot and a free throw, but Moanalua responded with seven consecutive points in the final minute of the half.
Terina Blue hit a 15-foot baseline jumper and reserve guard Brianna Lagat-Ramos swished another baseline shot. Blue then sank a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer to give her team a 20-11 lead at halftime.
"I think this game helps Terina a lot," Gonsalves said. Blue finished with seven points.
"Shannon and Tati (Beasley) couldn't buy a basket," Keanini said. "But give the girls credit. They kept digging in."
The Rough Riders brought more defensive intensity to the floor in the third quarter and pulled within 20-19 after Rodrigues turned a steal into a 3-pointer. However, Roosevelt had seven more turnovers in the third, and Moanalua kept a small lead going into the final quarter.
Roosevelt alternated between zone and man defenses, changing on Keanini's orders in the midst of Moanalua possessions. Rodrigues' layup gave Roosevelt a 27-26 lead midway through the fourth, the first of four consecutive lead changes.
"Our girls came to the huddle and executed what we asked them to do," Keanini said.
