UH's Huang third in NCAA 1-meter diving
University of Hawaii diver QiongJie Huang finished in third place in the 1-meter springboard diving event at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
Huang finished behind USC's Blythe Hartley and South Carolina's Allison Brennan. Huang won the 1-meter NCAA title last year.
UH's Rui Wang finished 15th and Megan Farrow was 27th.
Hawaii's Nicole Mackey is 21st after the preliminaries of the 200-yard individual medley.
Coolen's milestone comes on perfect game
Coach Bob Coolen earned his 600th victory as a softball coach yesterday as Hawaii defeated Longwood 6-0 in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Justine Smethurst threw a perfect game and Kaulana Gould had a two-run single for Hawaii.
The Rainbow Wahine (14-10) then gave Coolen win No. 601 with a 1-0 victory over San Diego State last night.
Coolen is 601-435-1 at Bentley (Waltham, Mass.) and UH.
» Hawaii Pacific split with North Georgia College and State University in a doubleheader yesterday. The Sea Warriors dropped the opener 11-9 and won the second game 1-0 at Kailua High School. HPU pitcher Courtney Kessell got the decision in both games, including a three-hitter in the second game.
Hawaii tennis team upsets Purdue
The University of Hawaii tennis team upset Purdue 5-2 yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Bryon Weinberg got the match-clinching win -- the fourth team point -- with a thrilling 6-4, 7-6 (4) decision over Colin Foster of the 70th-ranked Boilermakers.
Speed and quickness clinics continue
The final Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinics of the month are tomorrow and Sunday at Klum Gym at the University of Hawaii.
Former UH volleyball star Victoria Prince is the guest instructor. The clinic for ages 7-12 is from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and the session for ages 13 and up is from 10:20 to noon. The fee is $10. For more information, call 739-5444.
