IT TURNS out there wasn't as much drama as I thought over "Dancing in Paradise," a fundraiser planned by Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii and Sisters Offering Support.
First, the party takes place on Saturday -- not last weekend, as originally reported. Second, Las Vegas-based event promoter Wayne Coy was simply protecting his business interests when he called them last week to advise against using the words "second chance prom" in promotional materials. After initial attempts to contact him were unsuccessful, I was able to speak with him on Tuesday.
"We started the trademark process over a year and a half ago," he said. "We restrained ourselves from making any kind of communication with anybody ... until we knew for sure that all the I's had been dotted and the T's had been crossed."
It just so happened that official word came last week, so Coy started with informal calls to dozens of groups. When told about the situation here, he quickly made an attempt to compromise.
"When somebody tells me they're trying to raise money for abused children ... I'm completely empathetic to that," he said. "It's a great cause.
Both parties say they've put the matter behind them.
