Rough Riders roll
The parts are in place for the big red machine of Roosevelt.
With the entire lineup healthy and able, the Rough Riders opened regular-season play with a resounding 72-28 win over undermanned Farrington last night.
The win at Richard Kitamura Fieldhouse gave seventh-ranked Roosevelt a promising start to Oahu Interscholastic Association play. The Rough Riders did it with a balanced approach, using a fullcourt press and a smothering halfcourt man-to-man defense to force 25 Farrington turnovers.
Sophomore Iwalani Rodrigues pumped in 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting, and Tati Beasley added 14 points on 5-for-7 accuracy to pace Roosevelt (9-4 overall).
"We came in here confident and took care of business," said Beasley, a senior swingman.
Tiana Sugui hustled for 12 points and five steals. Dianna Zane had six boards and six of her team's 20 steals.
Joanna Montero led Farrington with nine points. Kirstyn Vaa hit the glass for seven rebounds on a tough night for the Lady Governors, who suited up nine players.
"They played hard. You gotta give them credit. They played with heart," Beasley said of Farrington.
The Rough Riders have had their difficulties, too, with injuries to Rodrigues and center Shannon Miyashiro in nonconference play.
"If we can stay healthy, we can strive for the title," Beasley said.
Rough Riders coach Bobby Keanini was relatively pleased.
"We took advantage of Farrington being short-handed. We shot well, and everyone is finding their roles," the longtime coach said. His team had 14 assists and just eight turnovers against Farrington's zone defense.
Defensively, however, the Rough Riders were relentless from start to finish.
"Intensity is something we've worked on. Not relaxing. Playing with enthusiasm throughout a game and being able to work through frustration," Keanini said.
The lopsided loss shouldn't hurt Farrington (8-4 overall) too much. Six of the seven teams in the East will qualify for the playoffs.
"Roosevelt has bigger girls like Tati and (Shannon) Miyashiro who can handle the ball. They're very balanced," Govs coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "Iwa's moves, you don't see that in average girls. She's got something special."
Tumaneng gave no indication about whether five players who are sidelined as a disciplinary measure will return. The Govs played hard despite their absence.
"It's tough. We gotta keep our heads up," he said. "We'll be fine."
