UH’s Daly gets off to a good start
Matt Daly made his first start for Hawaii a successful one by pitching six innings of two-hit baseball yesterday.
The freshman right-hander's task was made easier as his Rainbow teammates scored consistently in an 11-1 win over Western Illinois before 873 fans at Les Murakami Stadium.
The fourth game in the five-game, nonconference series was halted after seven innings due to a 10-run mercy rule agreed upon before the game by UH coach Mike Trapasso and WIU coach Stan Hyman.
Daly, who has appeared seven times in relief, threw four consecutive balls to leadoff batter Ryan Schmidgall.
"I was definitely excited. The first batter was really bad," Daly said. "It wasn't until the second inning that I really found my rhythm."
After recording an out, Daly walked the third batter, Matt Newquist. That prompted a visit from Trapasso.
"I just went out there to shake him up, to tell him to get going, in so many words," Trapasso said.
Daly gave up a single in the fourth and a one-out double in the sixth to T.J. Kistner. With Newquist at the plate, Daly missed with his first two pitches and Trapasso made a second trip to the mound.
"I told Matt that he had a big lead (8-1), but had just thrown two balls to their best hitter and the only way to get in trouble was to walk players. I told Matt to get him (Newquist) to make contact and hit it to someone," Trapasso said.
Newquist hit Daly's next pitch sharply to shortstop Nate Young for the second out and Travis Check bounced to third to end the inning.
"There are still things I need to work on," said Daly, who walked three and struck out four. "I would like to get ahead of the batters more and throw more strikes."
Keahi Rawlins came in to pitch the seventh and faced three batters.
The Rainbows (17-6) scored first for the fourth consecutive game with a run in the second.
Matt Inouye was safe on a fielding error by Schmidgall at short and went to second on a wild pickoff throw by WIU starter Aaron Madill. Kris Sanchez's grounder moved Inouye to third, and he scored on Landon Hernandez's single to left.
UH made the score 3-0 in the third when Robbie Wilder opened the inning with a double to right. With one out, Justin Frash walked on four pitches and Luis Avila was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
On Inouye's grounder to third, the Leathernecks got a forceout at second, but second baseman Kelly Flanery's relay to first went into the UH dugout as Wilder and Frash scored.
Check created the Leathernecks' run in the fourth with a one-out single to center. Check then stole second and third and came home when Hernandez's throw went into left field.
The 'Bows loaded the bases in the fourth on Hernandez's single and walks to Young and Wilder. Joe Spiers' sacrifice fly scored Hernandez, and Young came home on Frash's single to right.
UH increased its lead to 8-1 in the fifth. Inouye doubled to left and Jorge Franco walked. After two were out, Young and Wilder were hit by pitches, forcing in Inouye. Spiers singled to left, bringing in two teammates.
The game ended with two outs in the seventh. Frash's single to right sent Steve Bralver and Spiers across the plate.
Hernandez, who started so Esteban Lopez could rest his right shoulder (tendinitis), had his first three-hit game for UH.
"Landon stays within himself at the plate. He had kind of a long swing when he came here. He has been working with Coach (Keith) Komeiji on having a more compact, shorter swing," Trapasso said.
The Rainbows, who last played a five-game series in 1982, sweeping Nevada-Las Vegas, will try to do the same vs. the Leathernecks (2-13) today in the series finale that starts at 6:35 p.m.
Justin Costi (1-0, 8.49 ERA) starts for Hawaii.
