’Bows wring Leathernecks
Four Hawaii pitchers limited Western Illinois to two runs and 12 hits over 16 innings to lead the Rainbows to 5-1 and 7-1 wins yesterday at Les Murakami Stadium.
The doubleheader sweep in front of 936 fans gave the 'Bows the series, the fifth consecutive series they have won this season.
A negative note was the injury to Jon Hee's right shoulder when the UH second baseman made a diving attempt to field a hard-hit grounder off Ryan Schmidgall's bat in the second inning of the nightcap.
Hee suffered a dislocated shoulder. It was popped back in by trainer Neil Santiago on the field and Hee will be examined by a doctor tomorrow.
Freshman right-hander Matt Daly starts today's 1 p.m. game. Senior right-hander Justin Costi is scheduled to begin the series finale tomorrow at 6:35 p.m.
The Rainbows (16-6) had no comfort zone in the nine-inning opener until they pushed across three runs in the eighth. They scored at least one run in each of the first five innings of the seven-inning second game.
"Our first two games have been dogfights. Our deal on offense is to try to score a run an inning and we did that in the second game," UH coach Mike Trapasso said.
Junior left-hander Ian Harrington, with relief help from Darrell Fisherbaugh, won the opener. Senior left-hander Mark Rodrigues, with a seven-pitch final inning by Jayson Kramer, won the nightcap.
Harrington, in his longest outing of the season at 7 1/3 innings, allowed six hits, walked one and fanned two, to win his third game in four decisions.
"I definitely had a letdown in the sixth against Washington (his last start), so I doubled up on my conditioning this week and it seemed to work until the seventh," Harrington said. "I put Fish in a bad position, but he did a great job."
Harrington got into trouble in the eighth after Schmidgall's one-out single and Mike Triumph's double into the right-field corner put Leathernecks (2-12) at second and third with UH holding a 2-1 lead. But Fisherbaugh protected it.
With the infield playing in, Matt Newquist drilled a two-strike pitch on a line toward right field. Hee took a half-step leap to his left and caught the ball in the webbing of his glove to save at least one run. Fisherbaugh then fanned Tyler Johnson to end the inning.
In the opener, UH broke the 0-0 tie with a run in the fourth.
Luis Avila ripped WIU starter John Paul Shore's first pitch to left for a double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Hee's sacrifice fly to center.

UH's Matthew Inouye stole second base when Western Illinois shortstop Ryan Schmidgall had to leave the bag to get the ball.

The Leathernecks tied the score in the sixth when Triumph singled to center and scored on a double to left-center field by Newquist.
The 'Bows went up 2-1 in the bottom of the inning. Eli Christensen singled, moved to second when Avila walked, advanced to third on a fly to right and scored on Hee's ground double into the left-field corner.
Three unearned runs in the eighth gave Fisherbaugh a comfortable margin.
"I thought Ian had better command than his last outing. He was getting early-count outs and his two-seam fastball was down in the zone," Trapasso said.
In the second game, Hawaii scored first again when Matt Inouye drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Hee home. Hee had singled to center, took second when Justin Frash walked and third on Avila's single to short.
The 'Bows went up 2-0 with two outs in the second on Joe Spiers' infield single and Robbie Wilder's double down the left-field line on a two-strike pitch.
Frash began the third with a single to center, stole second and made the score 3-0 when he scored on a single to right by Inouye, who was 3-for-4 with two walks and four runs batted in yesterday. He raised his batting average to .489 (22-for-45).
"I'm just trying to keep my focus up there (at the plate). I'm trying not to give away any at-bats this year. They are important to me because I'm trying as hard as I can to get wins for this team," Inouye said.
The 'Necks got on the board in the fourth. Travis Check singled to left, swiped second and came home on consecutive groundouts.
The 'Bows answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Spiers scored on a bases-loaded walk to Avila, Christensen came in on Inouye's sacrifice fly and Jorge Franco singled Frash home.
Rodrigues said, "I worked my fastball in and out and didn't throw too many offspeed pitches. At least I went past two innings this time. I kept the ball down and my defense did a good job with the double plays."
Rodrigues only lasted two innings vs. Washington last week.
