Japanese man accused of rape jumps bail
A state judge has issued a warrant for the arrest of one of two Japanese nationals accused of raping two Japanese women, after he failed to show for a court hearing yesterday.
Circuit Judge Virginia Crandall also ordered that the $250,000 cash bail that Goro Miki posted be forfeited, and increased his bail to half a million dollars.
Defense attorney Victor Bakke said he does not know where his client is.
The Prosecutor's Office confirmed it is processing extradition papers in case he has returned to Japan.
Miki, 25, of Tokushinma-ken prefecture, and co-defendant Taizo Kirihara, 23, were indicted Dec. 21 with multiple counts of sexual assault involving two 19-year-old women on Dec. 14.
This was not the first time Miki failed to appear. At a Feb. 28 hearing, the defense told the court that Miki was not present because he believed he could return to Japan after earlier posting bail and would return for trial. At the time, the court ordered Miki to appear for yesterday's hearing.
Trial is set for June.
Kirihara has been in custody since his arrest Dec. 16, unable to post bail after it was increased to $250,000 following the indictment.

Police use nonlethal force to subdue agitated man
WAILUA, Kailua » Kauai police subdued a 53-year-old man by shooting him with a nonlethal round, either a beanbag or rubber bullet, after a two-hour stand-off Thursday.
At around 5 p.m., police responded to a domestic disturbance call on Lanakila Road in Wailua Houselots. Officers found the man holding two knives across the street from the residence, in the parking lot of Wailua Houselots Park.
After more than two hours of negotiations, the man became agitated and irrational, forcing officers from KPD's Special Service Team to use the nonlethal device before taking him into custody, county officials said.
The man was brought to Wilcox Hospital for treatment and evaluation and was later transported to Mahelona Hospital for treatment.
Charges are pending, police said.
