8-month project to repave South Street
South Street, a well-used stretch of road in Kakaako, will be repaved and mostly rebuilt over eight months this year as part of the city's ongoing rehabilitation of major streets in the downtown area.
"South Street is really bad," said John Lamar, a civil engineer with the city. "Normally, we do spot recon. But South Street is so bad, we're going curb to curb."
He said the city will dig down six to eight inches to remove old asphalt and then build up the layers with new asphalt.
The city has not yet picked a contractor or set a start date for the project.
Lamar said the city will restore about 3,000 feet, more than half a mile of South Street stretching from Ala Moana Boulevard to South King Street.
According to a city news release, the project "will include removal of existing asphalt concrete pavement surfaces, resurfacing and reconstruction of asphalt concrete pavements, construction of new concrete bus pads, reconstruction of existing curbs and gutters, and installation of pavement markings and markers."
He said the city has applied for a Community Noise Variance for night work from the state Department of Health so they can do the work at night, which "should accelerate the construction schedule, reduce traffic impacts and minimize the effect on area businesses."
The city is looking to do the work Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The rehabilitation of South Street is part of a project the city estimates will cost about $5.3 million over eight months to refurbish several main roads this year. Those streets include University Avenue and Keeaumoku, Sheridan and Rycroft streets.
