Rainbows beat UW; Arkansas wins title
Washington's loss gives the tourney to the Razorbacks
The Hawaii baseball team rallied for five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat the University of Washington 10-8 last night in the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament.
The loss by the Huskies assured No. 11-ranked Arkansas the title of the week-long baseball tournament that was plagued by rain. Hawaii and Washington played a second game late last night.
The Rainbows took advantage of a dropped throw by first baseman Curt Rindal that allowed Robbie Wilder to score in the first inning.
Wilder advanced to third on Justin Frash's hit-and-run single through the hole at short and scored on Luis Avila's sacrifice fly to center.
The 'Bows batted around and scored four runs in the third for 5-0 lead.
Wilder was hit by a pitch for the fourth time this season to start the inning. Frash walked. Avila lined a single to left, scoring Wilder and sending Frash to third. When left fielder Zach Clem booted the ball, Avila took second.
Matt Inouye singled to short, scoring Frash as Avila held at second. Jorge Franco doubled to left, scoring Avila as Inouye stopped at third. Inouye was out at the plate on Esteban Lopez's grounder to third, and Franco advanced to third on the play and scored on Eli Christensen's ground single to right.
Ian Harrington sailed through five innings of four-hit shutout ball but ran into difficulty in the sixth. Before the inning was over, the Huskies sent 10 men to the plate and tied the score at 5-5.
Ryan Anderson lined a 2-0 pitch to center to start the inning and Harrington walked Matt Hague on four pitches. With one out Harrington hit Rindal to load the bases.
Matt Lane singled to right, driving in two runs.
Matt Daly replaced Harrington on the mound, only to have pinch hitter Andy Lentz drive his second pitch high over the right-field wall for a three-run homer.
The Huskies went ahead 6-5 in the seventh when Rindal tripled to left-center field and scored on a single to center by Lane on the first pitch he saw from reliever Darrell Fisherbaugh.
Hawaii regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Jon Hee singled to center and scored on Frash's second homer of the season, a line drive over the right-field wall.
The 'Bows picked up three insurance runs they needed in the eighth on one hit, a two-run ground single to right by Inouye. That came on the first pitch from UW's fourth pitcher, Brandon McKerney, who, with his previous pitch, hit Avila with the bases loaded.
Washington scored twice in the ninth off Fisherbaugh and had runners at second and third when the UH closer ended the game with a groundout.
