Ballard, Abubo, Kennelly advance in Roxy Pro
Three Hawaii surfers advanced to the third round of the Roxy Pro surf contest today on the Gold Coast of Australia.
Kennelly had the hardest road. After placing third in her first-round heat, she avoided elimination by placing second out of three surfers in her second-round heat.
Ballard and Abubo placed second in their first-round heats and moved directly to the third round.
The Roxy Pro is the first women's event of the year on the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour.
» The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational's holding period closed yesterday, which means there will be no contest this winter at Waimea Bay.
Sporadic 20-footers came through during the waiting period that started Dec. 2, but consistent waves in the 20-foot-plus range are needed for the contest to be held.
The contest has only run in seven of the last 21 years.
Vulcans tie for ninth in Bakersfield
The Hawaii-Hilo golf team tied for ninth place at the Cal State Bakersfield Spring Invitational golf tournament yesterday in California.
First-round leader Kevin Shimomura of the Vulcans fell to a 9-over 81 yesterday to finish tied for ninth at 8-over 152. He was the only golfer to go under par in the first round with a 1-under 71.
Host Cal State Bakersfield won the team title at 25-over 601.
» The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine golf team finished in a tie for eighth place at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational yesterday.
UH's Dale Gammie shot the low round of the day with a 4-under 68 and finished in a tie for 12th at 4-over 148 over the two-day tournament.
UC Irvine won the team title at 5-under 571.
