It wasn't even close.
Led by record-breaking performances by Christel Simms and Brittany Beauchan, the Punahou girls placed first in 10 of 12 events to win the HHSAA/Local Motion Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday in Keaau.
The Buffanblu finished with 91 points, their highest point total since they won the title in 1992. ILH rival Iolani placed a distant second with 38 points, while Hawaii Prep took third with 28.
Punahou's Simms broke one of the HHSAA's oldest records with her time in the 200 freestyle. The freshman was timed in 1 minute, 50.46 seconds, besting Kathy Shipman's record of 1:50.55 set in 1979.
Beauchan won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.10 for the record and also teamed up with Simms, Kelli Moy and Michelle Yoshida to set the mark in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.80.
St. Andrew's Aleia Monden also left her mark, breaking her own record in the 1-meter dive. On the boys side, Kamehameha got past Punahou and four-time defending state champion Iolani to win its first swimming and diving title.
Senior Davis Kane and the Kamehameha boys used two wins in the freestyle relays and high finishes in the individual events to outscore the Buffanblu 67-54. The Warriors won six events, including two individual races each by Kane and sophomore Kekoa Taparra.
Kane set an HHSAA record with his time in the 50 freestyle. He finished in 20.73, just getting under the previous mark of 20.80 set by Punahou's Nick Borreca in 2001.
