Pua McGinness, Selleck’s aide, marks 60th with much aloha
P
ua McGinness, Tom Selleck's personal assistant for the past 20 years, celebrated her 60th birthday Feb. 17 at Kona Brewing Company in Koko Marina. Attending were her husband, cinematographer
Pat McGinness, her ohana from Molokai and Oahu and many friends. The party was thrown by her children,
Alika McGuire and
Lilia, who just happens to be assistant restaurant manager at KBC. Music was by
Nalu Hoe, made up of
Joe Recca, Vicki McGuire and Pua's nephew,
Kawika McGuire. Pua's brother,
Mel Paoa Jr., and his family, came from Molokai. A highlight was the Paoa Ohana singing "Waikiki Chicadee," written by Pua's father,
Mel Paoa Sr., an old-time beachboy. Other highlights were a beautiful hula by
Manu Bentley and a special hula by
Emma McGuire-Hanakeawe, Pua's niece. Guests included Selleck's longtime makeup man
Lon Bentley, Jane Stubenberg, and
David and
Laurie Callies. Among Pua's '63 Kamehameha graduates wishing her well were
Waisun Choy, sister of restaurateur-chef
Sam Choy. Pua has picked up a new passion since the "Magnum" years -- golf. She has a respectable 14 handicap. I'm sure husband Pat, who has a 4 handicap, had something to do with that. Pua wants Selleck to play golf. She said he used to play occasionally with
