Kamehameha avoids upset by Lahainaluna
The Warriors' Ho scores with 3 seconds left for the slim victory
JACOB HO just wasn't ready for his senior season to come to an end.
With the score tied at 49, the senior forward put back a missed shot with 3 seconds left to give Kamehameha a hard-earned 51-49 victory over Lahainaluna last night in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships at McKinley.
The Lunas had the ball under their basket with one last chance to either tie or win, but Rykin Enos stole the inbounds pass and dribbled the ball down court as time expired.
The win sets up a battle of two Kamehameha schools tonight as Kamehameha faces third-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii at 6 p.m. at McKinley.
"The teaching is done, they just need to go out and execute," Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "We're still having some slow starts, but give them credit. Lahainaluna is a great shooting team and they're in this tournament for a reason."
Mau Ah Hee nailed three of the Lunas' nine 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points, but Lahainaluna couldn't overcome the 28 turnovers that did them in.
"Lahainaluna is very resilient," Enos said. "They came out firing and hit their shots and we just had to lock up on defense."
Enos and Ho led the Warriors with 14 and 11 points and combined for all nine of the Warriors' fourth-quarter points.
A free throw by Enos gave Kamehameha a 49-47 lead with 1:21 to go, but Lahainaluna's Saia Taufa scored on a putback to tie it at 49 with 55 seconds to
go. The Warriors let the clock wind down to 17 seconds before calling timeout to set up their final play.

"We tried to set up a shot for Rykin," Ho said. "He got an open look and we all crashed the boards. The ball just bounced into my hands and I picked it up and shot it."
"We knew we were in the bonus, so I was looking to drive into the lane," Enos added. "I shot it and luckily (Ho) put it back in for us."
Coming off a loss to Iolani in a playoff for the ILH championship last week, the Warriors were slow starting the game as the Lunas opened the game on an 8-2 run and led 16-7 after the first quarter. A 3-pointer by Ah Hee gave Lahainaluna a 27-20 lead with 3:30 left, but the Warriors ended the quarter on a 13-3 run to take a 3-point halftime lead.
"We've been on a losing streak and I think we kind of forgot how to win," Ho said. "We picked up the defense, especially in the second half, and came together to pull this one out."
Andrew Godinet led the way with four steals as Kamehameha finished with 16 for the game.
Matt Perry scored 10 points and Paul Salvador and Julio Arvizu nailed three 3-pointers apiece for the Lunas.
