’Bows sweep away Lions
LOS ANGELES » The Hawaii Rainbows swept their three-game series with the Loyola Marymount Lions after scoring early yesterday in an 11-4 victory at George C. Page Stadium.
It is the first time a UH team has swept a nonconference series on the mainland. The only other time Hawaii played in such a series, UNLV won all three games in 1978.
The 'Bows (9-2) are off to their best start since the 1999 team started 13-2.
"We hit the ball, scored runs, made things happen this weekend and I'm glad we did," UH coach Mike Trapasso said.
For the second consecutive game, the 'Bows scored three runs in the first inning after two were out.
Derek Dupree singled to left, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Landon Hernandez walked. Joe Hee singled to right, scoring Dupree with Hernandez stopping at second.
After Ryan Asato walked to load the bases, Eli Rimes singled to right to score Hernandez, and Eli Christensen's single to center scored Hee.
Hawaii made the score 4-0 in the second. Robbie Wilder beat out an infield single over the bag at second. He took second when Dupree walked, advanced to third on a fly out, and scored on Hernandez's sacrifice fly.
The Rainbows then put together a six-run fourth, their biggest inning of the season, to take a 10-0 lead.
Dupree doubled in the first run. Hernandez and Asato contributed RBI singles, Christensen singled in two teammates -- giving him three RBIs for the day -- and another run scored on an error.
Left-hander Mark Rodrigues started for UH and pitched four innings. Trapasso wanted Rodrigues to go five innings so he would qualify for the win, but circumstances prevented that.
"Mark had a hard time getting loose today. He was tightening up between innings," Trapasso said. "He was throwing strikes and getting outs, but he really wasn't himself. He didn't have his best stuff. With the big lead, there was no sense taking a chance."
Rodrigues walked one, struck out three and gave up one run.
Matt Daly finished up to earn his second victory of the week. The freshman right-hander also got the win against Hawaii Pacific last Tuesday night.
Daly struggled in the fifth inning when the Lions (2-8) parlayed five hits into three runs to make the score 10-4, but he gave up just two hits over the final four innings.
"Matt's first inning may have been my fault because I'm not sure he was loose, even though he said he was," Trapasso said.
"He did get that big double play in the sixth and really threw well after that. It was good to see a freshman settle down after that first inning."
