RAINBOW BASEBALL
’Bows bust out on road
LOS ANGELES » Ian Harrington and Rich Olsen combined for another strong pitching effort as Hawaii won its third consecutive series with an 11-2 victory over Loyola Marymount yesterday.
The Rainbows (8-2) will go after their first sweep of the season today at 11 a.m. Hawaii time, with Mark Rodrigues on the mound in the finale of the three-game, nonconference series against the Lions (2-7).
Justin Frash led the 14-hit UH offense with four hits, including the Rainbows' first home run of the season, a two-run blast over the right-field wall at Page Stadium in the fifth inning.
Harrington, a transfer from Bellevue (Wash.) Community College, earned his first victory with 6 2/3 innings of seven-hit ball. The junior left-hander walked one, fanned three and allowed one earned run.
He gave up three consecutive hits to pinch hitters in the seventh and it resulted in LMU's second run. That signaled it was time to go to the bullpen. Olsen needed just one pitch to get a ground ball to end the inning, then closed out the game.
"Ian just got tired. He was throwing well with a good lead and I didn't want to let the Lions back in the game," said UH coach Mike Trapasso.
"The key for Ian and Rich was they did a good job of getting first-pitch strikes. Ian really stayed within himself and let his two-seamer (fastball) run. He has gotten better with each start."
The Rainbows gave Harrington a nice comfort zone by scoring three runs in the first inning with two outs.
Frash and Luis Avila singled to left. Jon Hee singled to right, scoring Frash and sending Avila to third. Jorge Franco singled to center, scoring Avila.
Hee moved to third on the hit and scored when Esteban Lopez was safe at first on a bobbled throw by LMU first baseman A.J. LaMonda.
"It was good to see the guys realize the inning wasn't over and not giving up until it was over," Trapasso said.
Frash's homer, with Robbie Wilder on board with the second of his three walks, put the Rainbows up 5-1 in the fifth.
Lopez started the sixth with a double down the left-field line and eventually scored on a balk. Frash tripled to start the seventh and came home on Avila's infield single.
The big hit in a four-run ninth was a soft, two-run single to center by Frash after Wilder and Nate Young walked and advanced on a wild pitch.
The Rainbows played good defense, with Hee handling several tough plays at third base. With an LMU runner on the move from first base, second baseman Eli Christensen turned a difficult double play in the sixth.
"With (shortstop) Joe Spiers struggling, I went to Nate Young and he made three very good plays today," Trapasso said.
Spiers has made three fielding errors in the two games. He let a ground ball go through his legs with two outs in the fourth inning that allowed the Lions to score their first run.
Rodrigues, a left-hander, is 1-0 with a 4.50 earned-run average. He will be opposed by right-hander Roberto Torres (0-1, 6.23).
