Rainbows go 1-1 in Desert Classic
The University of Hawaii softball team rebounded from a 5-3 loss to No. 22 Oregon to win its late game against Central Michigan, 3-2, on the third day of the UNLV Desert Classic yesterday in Las Vegas.
Against the Ducks (5-3), the Rainbow Wahine (7-5) took a one-run lead in the fourth inning as sophomore outfielder Brandi Peiler belted a solo home run to break a scoreless tie. But the Ducks answered with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to get the win.
Peiler again came through for the Rainbow Wahine in their second game, going 3-for-3 and hitting another home run.
Hawaii wraps up the final day of the tournament today with a game against No. 4 Tennessee.
» Hawaii Pacific dropped two against Simon Fraser yesterday at Sea Warrior Field.
The Sea Warriors fell 2-1 in the first game. Dana Berry allowed six hits while striking out 10 over seven innings in the loss. Simon Fraser picked up 13 hits in the second game, winning 8-5.
» To finish up its season-opening 11-game road trip, Hawaii-Hilo dropped a game to Grand Canyon yesterday, 3-2, in the Division II Leadoff Classic in Phoenix.
The Vulcans scored both their runs in the third inning as Vanessa Badora hit an RBI double and then scored on an error by the pitcher.
Hawaii-Hilo plays Simon Fraser on Friday and Saturday in Hilo.
Hawaii starts road trip with loss
The University of Hawaii women's tennis team lost 7-0 at Long Beach State yesterday to open up its six-match road trip.
The Rainbow Wahine play at Loyola Marymount today.
