Iolani dispatches Waiakea in quarters
Another bruising afternoon yesterday equaled one more victory for the Iolani Raiders.
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up endured all the punishment Waiakea had to give in a 4-0 win yesterday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

On the strength of two goals and one assist by Raymond Machi, Iolani (13-2-1) advanced to tonight's semifinals of the Meadow Gold/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships. The Raiders meet Mililani at 8 p.m.
Iolani endured the tough defense of Leilehua in a 3-0 win on Wednesday, but Waiakea was equally as rugged. The Raiders' balance and expertise were evident against the young Warriors.
"We played a very good team that is highly disciplined and has excellent technical skills," Waiakea coach Gordon Inouye said. "That's a level we aspire to."
Waiakea (15-3), champion of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, plays Kaiser today, 4 p.m.
"We'll regroup and do our best. It's more physical than they're used to," Inouye said of his team. "It's the nature of officiating. I'm not complaining, of course, but it is different."
Waiakea was whistled for 24 fouls to Iolani's 13. The Warriors, who start five sophomores and two freshmen, were assessed two yellow cards.
The Raiders didn't have much of a scouting report on Waiakea.
"We knew they would play a lot of long ball, and I know Gordon from OPD (Olympic Player Development)," Iolani coach Chris Lee said. "Typically, Big Island teams play physical."
Iolani needed only 20 seconds to net its first goal. Morgan Langley delivered a cross to Machi, who scored from in close for a 1-0 Raiders lead.
"It was a beautiful ball. I happened to be there," Machi said.
At the 4-minute mark, Machi fed Blaine Gonsalves, who booted in a 25-yard score to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.
"Coach always tells us most goals are scored in the first 10 minutes of each half," said Machi, a senior forward. "We came out ready. We just motivate each other real well, keep it real positive. We're a one-team posse."
