Captain Lyman given fond aloha off Honolulu Harbor
A large number of boats took the family and many friends of Harbor Pilot Captain
David Kawika Lyman out of Honolulu Harbor Saturday to spread his ashes and bid the son of Hawaii a final aloha. David, 62, was killed Jan. 29 after falling from a cruise ship's ladder as he was descending to the pilot boat. On Saturday, Senior Pilot Boat Captain
Kiki Hugho took David's family out to the sendoff. Among the vessels involved were a fire boat that sprayed water high into the air, ocean-going and harbor tugs, Navy tugs, pleasure yachts, a Coast Guard vessel, kayaks and the Hokulea. David was first mate on the Polynesian sailing canoe's maiden voyage. An Air Guard F-16 flew over the boats and dipped its wings. Harbor Pilot Captain
Ed Enos coordinated the smooth-running sendoff. "It was excellent," Kiki said. "The wind settled down and it was a nice day. Nobody will see something of this size ever again." After it was all over, the crowd flocked to Merchant Street, which was blocked off in front of Murphy's.
Don Murphy put out free food and said about 500 people attended, including U.S. Rep.
Neil Abercrombie. Music was performed by
Mihana Souza, Ryan Tang, Ivan Hoopii, Dave Awong, Steve Wofford, Kaipo Poomaikai and Kiki.
